article imageNick Tangorra Band talks new music, influences and Austin Mahone Special

By Markos Papadatos     Jul 15, 2014 in Music
The members of the Nick Tangorra band, Nick, Will and Rafe, took some time from their schedule to talk about their influences and musical endeavors, which include a sophomore album.
The Nick Tangorra Band is made up on Nick on lead vocals, as well as his brother, Rafe Tangorra on drums and Will Ahrens on guitar and backing Vocals. Rafe also serves as the group's musical director.
The band has been in the studio relentlessly working on their second album. "We're really happy with how it's going, being that we've begun to dabble with different sounds and genres for the second album. I'll guess you'll just have to wait and hear," Nick said with a laugh.
A fellow Long Islander, Nick had auditioned for the American reality singing competition, The X Factor, which propelled him to pop fame. "Basically in a nut shell, I got 4 'yeses' from Simon Cowell, Demi Lovato, Kelly Rowland, and Paulina Rubio when I auditioned at Nassau Coliseum. That was probably one of the most surreal experiences for me, especially since I go to concerts there all the time, and now to have been able to perform on that stage for such amazing judges and people of the industry was insane!" Nick exclaimed.
Regarding their plans for the future, Rafe stated, "Our future is looking very bright as we are currently part of the MagCon and RunAround tours with artists such as Zendaya, Shawn Mendes, Hot Chelle Rae, and Jacob Whitesides."
Rafe added, "In addition to all the touring we are currently doing, we are finishing up our second album and hopefully, it will be released in early fall."
Nick was influenced by such artists as Bruno Mars, Amy Winehouse, Justin Timberlake and Frank Sinatra. "These are all huge musical inspirations to me. I'm kind of an old soul, but I just love listening to the passion and stories in their voices," he said.
As a guitarist, Will's biggest influence was Jimi Hendrix. "Jimi was so unbelievably crafty on guitar that I still wonder how he played some of those leads on his records. In terms of songwriting, The Beatles take the cake there. Their songs are so catchy, memorable, and meaningful all at once. I'd love to write songs that will live on for generations just as The Beatles' catalog has," Will said.
Rafe tends "to pull his style from multiple drummers" ranging from John Bonham of Led Zeppelin, to Dean Castronovo of Journey, and even Josh Mayfield of the gospel group, The Mayfield Brothers.
Nick and Will had the privilege to see pop superstar Austin Mahone perform live on July 9 at the iHeartRadio Theater, presented by P.C. Richard and Son, in New York City, which they dubbed as a "great" experience. "It was such a high-energy show with amazing choreography and insane vocal arrangements. We were really happy to see everything is going great for Austin, and we only wish him the best," they said.
For their fans, the guys echoed their gratitude by saying, "Thank you forever and always."
