Justin Bieber calls Billboard Music Awards ‘fake’ and ‘hollow’

Bieber at Billboard

The 22-year-old Bieber, who won a BBMA as the Top Male Artist and Top Social Artist, called the awards show “fake” and suggested people there were more interested in hobnobbing than actually celebrating and listening to music. Posting on Instagram, he spoke of “fake smiles” and of a lack of “authenticity” at award shows in general.

“I don’t know about these award shows,” the Biebs began. “No disrespect to anybody at any of the shows or the people running it. Nothing but love for you guys and your support. But I don’t feel good when I’m there nor after. I try to think of it as a celebration but can’t help feeling like people are rating and grading my performance.

“A lot of people in the audience there to be seem worried about how much camera time they will get or who they can network with,” the Canadian continued. “When I’m doing a regular show I feel they are there for the right reasons and to strictly have a good time! But these award shows seem so hollow.”

Performs 2 songs

Bieber performed at the awards show Sunday evening, thrilling fans with renditions of “Sorry” and “Company.” Some music writers said despite the success of his performance he did not look engaged or happy to be there while onstage.

Bieber spoke only briefly when he accepted his award for Top Male Artist, simply thanking his family and thanking fans for believing in him. He did not say anything negative about the show.

He ended his talk by saying “enjoy your night.”
