Wantagh - Country star Joe Nichols sat down and chatted with me prior to his concert on July 27 at the Nikon at Jones Beach Theater in New York.
As Digital Journal reported, his show was well-received, opening for Lady Antebellum and Billy Currington.
He praised Long Island, New York, for "its great weather, great scenery and the people up here are one of a kind." "It's a great tour with a very talented line-up with Billy Currington and Lady Antebellum. They are all great singers, so it feels like a very musical tour. I am glad to be here," he said.
His hit single "Yeah" has spent three weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot Country Airplay charts. "To have two back-to-back No. 1 singles is incredible. We are trying to keep it rolling with another one," he said.
The music video for "Yeah" included a comic book feel to it, which made the video more lively. "It made the video look different than anything else out there, and I think the fans responded really well," he said.
Nichols praised his producer, Mickey Jack Cones, for his great work ethic. "Mickey is so great and he works tirelessly and so much. I feel for his health sometimes, since he works so much. He has a mind that keeps on working all day long, and he is a great singer, so he can help me out in the studio. He's a great producer and engineer," Nichols said.
His rendition of the Merle Haggard classic "My Favorite Memory," appears on the Merle Haggard tribute CD entitled Working Man's Poet: A Tribute To Merle Haggard that was released on the Broken Bow Records Music Group, along with "Footlights," which is featured on both Nichols' Crickets album and the Merle tribute CD.
Most recently, Nichols collaborated with rising country singer Lucy Hale on her new album, where they collaborated on "Red Dress." "We went in with the song and it sounded like a hit to me, so it was an obvious 'yes' and she did a great job," he said.
Nichols is motivated each day by his family: his wife, Heather, and his three daughters (that includes baby Georgia that was born on May 20).
He continued to extol country songstress Ashton Shepherd as his dream collaboration choice. "I love Ashton. She is a great singer and I wish she would get more respect and more due in this industry," he said.
