Jazz vocalist Emi Meyer talks ‘Monochrome’ CD and Colbie Caillat (Includes interview)

In 2007, Meyer won the Seattle-Kobe Jazz vocalist competition. “It was really amazing because I went in with no expectations. I was the youngest in the adult division, no experience, and it was also the first time someone was performing with original songs. But I am really honored that they chose me and it shows how open-minded that year’s judges were! I am really grateful,” she said.

Throughout her career, she collaborated with such artists as Colbie Caillat, Yael Naim, Joe Henry and others. “Colbie and I opened in Los Angeles, Joe in Tokyo, and both are cool people. I know Yael Naim the best, with her partner David Donatien, they are amazing role models. I really look up to Yael, because she worked really hard to get to where she is with her sound. And of course, David really brings it to life as well. I have seen how they live and work in Paris, and they have this wonderful family life as well as being creative partners. I think that is the healthiest balance you can hope for as a musician,” she said.

On her future plans, she said, “We’re re-releasing ‘Galaxy’s Skirt’ with a bonus remix track, that is exciting because I am shooting a video for it in Kyoto with the amazing cosmetic brand Tatcha. They draw their inspiration from Kyoto, where I was born, so it’ll be an amazing collaboration. I’ve also been playing around with adding traditional Japanese instruments to some of my material, still in the experimental stages. I have shows in New York at Cafe Bonafide on November 13, and then Seattle at The Triple Door before heading back to Japan for tour.”

Her latest album, “Monochrome” debuted at No. 1, which was quite flattering for the songstress. “It’s always great to have such a show of support for an album. You can’t take anything for granted in this day, so it really makes me appreciate every single one of my fans,” she said.

In 2016, that CD will be released in America. “Yes! It will be released through the Seattle label Origin, so it’s sort of a homecoming to my roots since I recorded my first albums in Seattle. We’re swapping out some jazz standards for new originals, so that’s exciting as well,” she said.

She listed Robbie Robertson as her dream male duet choice. “He is an amazing musician, person, actor, writer, and I could go on,” she said.

For her fans, she concluded, “Thank you so much for putting up with my bilingual posts on Instagram and Twitter. It’s really great to hear from you, and I’m so happy it’s become this cool community of individuals from across the world!”
