Singer-songwriter Janey Street chatted with Digital Journal about her new EP, the critically-acclaimed "I'm Not the Girl I Used to Know."
Regarding the song selection process for her new EP, she said, "The EP is really 5 songs off of the full 13-song CD that will be released on June 24. The label really wanted 'I’m Not The Girl I Used To Know' and 'Situation' to be two of the choices and that was cool with me. Because the CD is very diverse, I wanted to move from one song to another stylistically in a smooth way and I also took tempo into consideration. I think it ended up working well."
One of the songs from the album that stands out to her is "Bring It On," since it has a real pop/R&B feel to it. "It's very retro, yet modern and can be sung in a lot of different ways. That's just me talking like a songwriter," she said.
Street explained, "'I'm Not The Girl I Used To Know' is a song I wrote with Colin Devlin when I was in LA writing for the record. The label put us together and we didn't know each other but I had heard Colin's work as an artist and just fell in love with it. When we hooked up, he had heard a lot of my work and had a lot of insight into me before we even met. Together we came up with a very reflective rock ballad that is in keeping with my story. 'Bring It On,' I wrote with Billy Lawson who is a very successful writer who comes from Muscle Shoals. We have been co-writing here in Nashville on and off for years. He's got the soul thing happening and so do I. It's simple. I come up with a great hook and melody with a few lines, he walks in the room and an hour later we have a great song like 'Bring It On.'"
Her future plans include touring and making a lot of records. "I also would like to write my second screenplay if I ever get the time. Spending some time with the people I love because that is something that's important to me. Also hanging out with my dog 'Bessie Smith' who I named after the great blues singer," she said.
She hinted that she will be coming to New York in mid-May, where she will play a show.
For her fans, she concluded, "I'm so glad you are all digging my new music. Thanks for your support. Stay tuned!"
