article imageInterviewing the Interviewer: Country radio queen Kelly Ford Special

By Markos Papadatos     Sep 21, 2014 in Music
Esteemed radio personality Kelly Ford from New York's country radio station, Nash FM 94.7 gets the tables turned on her, and is the interview subject in this feature article.
Regarding her experience at Nash FM 94.7, she remarked, "I feel super-lucky and I am very excited. I feel like all the hard work that we have done over the past two years has paid off."
Ford added, "Stepping on the Madison Square Garden stage to talk about Nash FM was unparalleled and pretty special. Also, being the first personality to ever talk on Nash FM on February 25, 2013, was very cool. We are part of making history in building something really special, since people have been without country music for so long in New York. We are really helping people, with a common interest, come together. That's the biggest thing that Nash FM 94.7 has accomplished. It is an outlet for people that have a passion for country music."
Throughout her illustrious career in the profession, she has served as the morning radio personality in Denver, Colorado, where she woke up country fans and listeners for two decades. "That was completely different from Nash FM. I did the morning show, but I met a lot of listeners. The morning show vs. a midday personality deals with a totally different population every day," she said.
She has garnered three Country Music Association (CMA) awards for radio broadcasting, as well as an Academy of Country Music (ACM) award for "Best Major Market Radio Personality." "The first CMA award was incredible. It was very cool," she acknowledged.
Ford noted that she is drawn to the country genre due to its "relatable stories."
While she has interviewed all of the biggest names in music, several that stand out to her include Dolly Parton. "Dolly has that gift of making me feel as if I am the only person in the room, and be engaged in a way that is rare. She is a pretty special human being and an amazing artist. Another great interview was Luke Bryan in New York City. Luke really listens well, he is fully-engaged and he puts on a really fun live show," she said.
Ford admitted that social media has changed her life as a radio personality. "Even when I did a morning show and talked more, social networking has allowed me to get to know my listeners well with what they post, and what they choose not to post. It deepens our bond and our relationship, not just for me, but for anyone," she said.
The country radio queen listed Alison Krauss as her dream female interview choice. "I am a big fan of Alison's. She has the voice of an angel, and I love the album that she did with Robert Plant," she said.
For hopefuls who wish to go into radio broadcasting, she recommended that they stay true to themselves. "Always be yourself and always be tenacious. Do not let the people that say 'you can't do it,' stop you. If it is your dream, and you keep at it, I really do believe, in most cases, that it works out. It's a job that you have to work hard every single day, but if you have a passion for it, got for it," she said.
