article imageInterview with Michael W. Smith: 'You Won't Let Go' Special

By Markos Papadatos     Mar 13, 2014 in Music
Michael W. Smith is one of Christian music's best-loved singer-songwriters. He opened up about his forthcoming studio album "Sovereign," which comes out on May 13.
This is his first new worship album since 2008 and it features a deluxe edition with bonus songs and videos. "I am looking forward to people hearing the new CD for sure," he said.
The song selection process for the new album was quite simple: Smith revealed that he was looking for "great songs." "I switched labels and this is my first record with Capitol and it was a team effort. We wanted to make the greatest record of all-time," he said with a laugh. "We just assembled a team and we started going with all of these 'kids' that I never worked with before. The first song we wrote is a song called 'Miracle' and I still love it. I have listened to it 150 times and I still like it. We wrote 120 songs to narrow it down to 12. I think we have some very, very special with this album. You can listen to it from start to finish."
He continued, "Half of this record can be sung in a church and the other half of it is anthemic. It is like a Coldplay show, where everybody is singing every word. It is very different from my previous three worship albums."
"It's going to be really fun to bring these songs from 'Sovereign' to a live setting," he added. "On Friday night, we will be playing our first show in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and we will play half of the songs from the new record. I am pretty pumped up about that."
He shared that his lead-off single "You Won't Let Go" is "doing well," and it sits at No. 21 on the R &R National Christian Audience charts. It was the most-added single in its first week at radio.
On his future plans, he remarked, "We are starting to tour lightly in the spring and it will pick up in the summer. In 2015, we will be doing a world tour."
Smith feels that music is his calling in life. Throughout his career in music, Smith has won 3 Grammy awards and an astonishing 44 Gospel Music Association Dove Awards; moreover, 33 of his songs reached No. 1 at Christian radio. "These boggle my mind, but I am very grateful for those," he said with a laugh. "I appreciate all of the support."
He has sold over 15 million albums and in the social media world, Smith has over 1.4 million fans on Facebook, as well as over 418,000 followers on Twitter.
On the key to longevity in the industry, he stated, "You need to stay at it. Push yourself in a good way and keep the music fresh. The key for me is surrounding myself with great people, who better than I am and creative people."
For hopefuls, who wish to go into music professionally, he underscored the importance of following their passion. "Go for it and pursue your heart's desires," he said.
Smith concluded, "I have the greatest fans in the world. They are awesome and they are extremely supportive. They are all pretty anxious to hear this new record. I am looking forward to having them hear it."
