article imageInterview: Country rapper Smo talks new 'Say My Name' single Special

By Markos Papadatos     Jul 1, 2016 in Music
Warner Music Nashville country-rap artist Smo chatted with Digital Journal about his music video for his new single "Say My Name."
On his music video for "Say My Name," Smo said, "It's insane. We call it Smo 2.0. We were doing a new style of songs. Back when I started making music, in the late 90s, I was very much hip hop and rap. I was the same guy that grew up in the country and lived in the country, but was overwhelmed with rap and hip hop. I always knew I was a rapper. As I evolved as an artist and group, I started leaning towards who I was from my roots, as far as my country living and upbringing and the outlaw country music I grew up on. Then, the music became more country."
The song and video, in his own words, have him falling back into his rap roots and they lure the next generation of fans with a more modern and edgy side of Smo. "I used to shoot my own videos with a $50 budget and now that I've proved myself to Warner Bros., they are willing to let me play with a bigger budget with regards to my visuals," he said.
His breakthrough studio album Kuntry Livin' has celebrated 10 consecutive weeks in the Top 10 of the Billboard country and rap charts. Smo is a true YouTube phenomenon, with over 50 million hits on YouTube, nearly 40 million streams and he has sold in excess of 450,000 tracks. "That was a big deal for me. I don't know if that has ever been done for both charts by an artist. It was a great achievement for me, and I am hoping with this new album that we are going to do similar ground-breaking things when it comes to charts and numbers," he said. "It's the best project that I've ever done."
Smo listed reigning "Male Vocalist of the Year" Chris Stapleton as his dream country collaboration choice. "I also like a lot of the artists on Warner," he said.
