article imageGwen Sebastian talks new 'Small Town Soul' song and Blake Shelton Special

By Markos Papadatos     Aug 20, 2014 in Music
Country singer Gwen Sebastian discusses her latest single "Small Town Soul" and collaborating with Blake Shelton, her mentor on "The Voice," and she has been on tour with him as a member of his band.
Regarding her new single "Small Town Soul," she remarked, "I wish I could take credit for writing it, but Nicolle Galyon and Hailey Steele, who were contestants on The Voice the same season as I was, wrote it. They are both Midwestern girls like me and when I heard it, I thought it really told my story of how I grew up, where I grew up, and what I am doing now. It says that no matter what happens, you will always remember where you come from."
As Digital Journal reported, her "Small Town Soul" single garnered a favorable review and rightfully so. It earned her comparisons to such award-winning country stars as Pam Tillis and Reba McEntire, which was quite flattering for Sebastian. "Those ladies are two of my favorite people. I love them and they are definitely influences in my music," she said.
Her song's music video featured both of her parents in there, as it was filmed on their farm in North Dakota. "I am excited about the video, and I wanted to keep it local, including the actual production company. They put so much work and time in it to make it happen," she said.
Earlier this month, Sebastian performed with country mega-star Blake Shelton at New York's Madison Square Garden, where she sang back-up for the majority of the show, and joined Shelton for their duet "My Eyes." "That's one of my favorite things to do. I love performing live. It's my outlet. That was really cool for Blake to bring me up front like that," she said.
Their "My Eyes" collaboration reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Airplay charts in mid-July, which marked Sebastian's first chart-topping single. "That still doesn't seem quite real. I don't think you could ever get used to having a No. 1 by your name," she admitted.
For the remainder of the year, Sebastian will be doing her own shows, and she will be on tour with Shelton again. "I want to really focus on songwriting, and possibly going into the studio again and recording more songs," she said.
Particularly impressive about Shelton and his wife, country superstar Miranda Lambert, is that they both fight who is going to take Sebastian out on tour with them each weekend. "They are both amazing. They are obviously talented, but they are two of the most genuine people I know," she said.
Over the course of her career, being on the reality singing competition The Voice was one of her fondest moments, as well as meeting Shelton and touring with him, participating in Shelton's "Healing in the Heartland: Relief Benefit Concert" for the Oklahoma tornadoes, and performing on the historic Grand Ole Opry, the latter of which she dubbed as a "spiritual" feeling. "There is no place like the Opry. That stage is one to respect," she said.
A few days ago, Sebastian completed the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, which raises funds to bring awareness to Lou Gehrig's disease, in an effort to find a cure. "It was so cold. You were thinking that it was going to be okay, but all of a sudden it happens, and then its ridiculously cold. I think its important to do the challenge and you should still give some money too," she said.
Aside from working with Shelton, she would love to collaborate with Country Music Hall of Famer Vince Gill as her dream duet choice. "I have loved Vince forever. I have all of his albums, and can probably sing every song," she said.
