The video for Gangnam Style has become the first YouTube video to be watched more than two billion times. The hit, by the South Korean rapper Psy, was first released in July 2012.
Time flies. In November 2012, Digital Journal reported that the pop music number "Gangnam Style," a dance track by South Korean pop singer PSY, is officially YouTube's most-watched video of all time. Shortly after that, in December 2012, Digital Journal announced that the toe-tapping pop hit had reached 1 billion YouTube views. Now, 18 months on, the two billion mark has been surpassed.
According to the BBC, only Justin Bieber's video for the track Baby, with 1 billion YouTube hits, comes anywhere near the global appeal of "Gangam Style" on the site.
The song falls within the highly popular genre K-pop. Billboard notes that the phrase "Gangnam Style" is a Korean word that refers to a lifestyle associated with the Gangnam District of Seoul. According to the L.A. Times, the song talks about "the perfect girlfriend who knows when to be refined and when to get wild."
In the unlikely event that you haven't seen the video, here it is:
