article imageEDM star Christopher Lawrence talks 'Pharmacy: Phase 4' Special

By Markos Papadatos     Nov 11, 2014 in Music
Electronic dance music (EDM) star Christopher Lawrence chatted with Digital Journal about his newest compilation "Pharmacy: Phase 4."
It was released exclusively on Beatport on October 27 and worldwide on November 10 on Pharmacy Music. His latest compilation features the label's most prolific producers such as Fleming & Lawrence, Lisa Lashes, Frost Raven, Kessler, Dub Tek, Liam Wilson, Fergie & Sadrian, among others. "Every year, we do a Pharmacy Phase compilation. The first one I did was four years ago, and I have come back to do Pharmacy Phase 4," he said. "The quality of music that Pharmacy has been putting out is ramped up. The quality of the music is phenomenal. When I went through the tracks to select to put on the compilation, it wasn't about finding enough tracks for the mix, it was about narrowing it down to 15 tracks, otherwise, there were so many to choose from. That lent itself to making a really good mix. These were able to tell a story as opposed to being just a bunch of tracks. It was such a pleasure. I am proud of where our label is and the artists on our label."
Throughout his two decade career in the genre, Lawrence was crowned "Best DJ in America" by the International Dance Music Association (IDMA) in 2008, and he ranked No. 4 on DJ Magazine's Top 100 DJs poll in 2006. He is best known for his electrifying live sets, innovative productions, and his commitment to underground trance music.
The veteran producer and DJ noted that the modern electronic dance scene is more singles-driven as opposed to album-driven. "You can put out a great album and have 10 great tracks on there, but the problem is that people pick their favorite, two and those are the ones that get played, while the others get lost and the album disappears. It is better to release a single every few weeks as opposed to an album a year," he said.
He has stayed true to himself all of these years in underground trance since that is where his heart is. "That's the vibe that I like," he said. "EDM is really taking over the United States. Every club wants to look like a Vegas-style club."
