Detour will feature her take on classic country hits from the ’40s, ’50s and ’60s. It will feature collaborations with such award-winning country artists as Vince Gill, Emmylou Harris, Jewel, Alison Krauss and Willie Nelson. Her 11th studio album will be available on May 6, and will be released on Sire Records, with the label’s founder, Seymour Stein, serving as executive producer.
Lauper is a Grammy, Emmy and Tony-winning singer-songwriter. She recorded this new project in Nashville with a band that was made up of the top session players in Music City. This project was a lifelong dream for Lauper, especially since she grew up listening to such country singers as Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn and Wanda Jackson.
The opening track is a cover of Wanda Jackson’s “Funnel of Love” that was recorded in 1960, and she covers Ray Price’s “Heartaches By The Number.” She pays homage to Patsy Cline by singing two of her classic hits such as “Walkin’ After Midnight” and “I Fall To Pieces.” Emmylou Harris joins her on the title track “Detour,” while Jewel yodels on Patsy Montana’s “I Want To Be a Cowboy’s Sweetheart,” which was the first country tune by a female artist to sell one million units.
