Country singer Mitchell Tenpenny talks ‘Black Crow’ CD and single (Includes interview)

He co-wrote his single “Black Crow” with songwriter Brad Clawson. “Brad is one of my best friends, and we wrote that song in college. I love writing with Brad,” he said.

Tenpenny either wrote or co-wrote all 11 tracks on his debut album, Black Crow, which will be released on April 28, on Creation Lab Records. “Songwriting is very important to me, as an artist, and it’s something that I always wanted to do. I wanted to be a part of every song and write them,” he said. “It is a fun experience to sit down and write the songs.”

He was born and raised in Nashville, and graduated from Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) with a music business degree. He plays such musical instruments as guitar, drums, keyboards, bass, mandolin, banjo, bouzouki and dobro. His influences include the late “King of Pop” Michael Jackson, John Mayer, as well as such country greats as Garth Brooks, Keith Urban, Brooks & Dunn and Brett Eldredge. “MTSU was awesome and it has great studios. It was an awesome experience,” he said.

Aside from music, Tenpenny was also featured in a documentary entitled Voyage, which covers a 21-day boat trip where everyone takes a digital sabbatical from their phones and computers. It has won several awards including “Best Tennessee Film.” “That was the biggest blessing that I have had my whole life. We got to travel 1,000 miles down the Tennessee river and we did that for three weeks. I got to meet so many people that I would have never met before,” he said.

Tenpenny listed Taylor Swift and Miranda Lambert as his dream female duet choices.
