article imageColton Dixon talks new video 'More of You' and 'Anchor' CD Special

By Markos Papadatos     Jul 25, 2014 in Music
Christian music sensation Colton Dixon chatted with me about his upcoming album "Anchor," which features the single "More of You."
His forthcoming sophomore album Anchor will be released on 19 Recordings/ Capitol Christian Music Group. Prior to branching out into the Christian music genre, Dixon was known as a finalist on season 11 of the reality singing competition American Idol. "We are stoked to have new music out," he said. "This record is more of a series of personal collections, even more so than the previous album. I deal with a few different topics along the way. It's really about finding stability and trying to balance the ups and downs."
Regarding his single "More of You," he remarked, "There is a story in the Bible about the Tower of Babel. People are trying to build this tower to reach heaven and it is obvious that this cannot happen. The meaning behind the video is realizing that you can't build your own way. You can't make your own ticket. The only way is to go deeper in your faith, rather than trying to build up your kingdom. Once we got the idea on paper, my director ran with it and absolutely killed it."
For his sophomore studio effort, he co-wrote songs with such renowned songwriters and artists such as Trevor McNevan, Matthew West, TobyMac, Ben Glover and Matt Bronleewe. "Matthew West is awesome. I have been a fan of his for a very long time. We did the song 'Limitless' together and it was written within an hour tops, and it came out so quickly. It was so awesome and I am stoked for people to hear it. That's one of my favorites on the record actually," he said. "TobyMac has been such a big piece in our industry. Writing with his was great. I was totally geeking out at first, but he brought a lot to the table. It has been so much fun to play the song we wrote live."
His 2013 debut album, A Messenger, set the record for biggest first-week sales by a new solo Christian act, becoming the No. 1 selling album of 2013 by a new Christian artist and the No. 9 best-selling album of 2013 in the Christian genre. "That is still really hard for me to believe honestly," he said with a sweet laugh. "It is cool to me how God opens doors and shuts other doors and provides opportunities. I cannot believe that I get to do what I do for a living. That's the cherry on top of it all."
In addition to his chart success, Dixon was nominated for three 2013 Dove awards, and he took home the award for "Best Rock/Contemporary Album of the Year" for A Messenger. "I had always wanted to attend the Dove awards, as a fan of Christian music, but to win an award that first time was such a cool night. I still have that award on display loud and proud at my place," he said.
Dixon was also nominated for "Male Artist of the Year" at the 2014 K-LOVE Fan Awards. "That took me by surprise. The competition was quite stiff," he said with a laugh. "You have all these Christian music legends in that category, and then there is that 22-year-old kid just getting started in Christian music and that was me."
He listed Hayley Williams from Paramore as his dream female duet choice. "I have always been a Paramore fan. Her voice is great and I love the band. I love their music and their writing," he said.
