Singer-songwriter Christina Perri chatted about her latest single "Burning Gold" as well as her forthcoming tour with pop star Demi Lovato.
On July 26, Perri played a free concert at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow, New York, as part of Fresh 102.7 FM's "Fresh in the Park" series, where she shared the stage with pop duo Tegan and Sara. "That was a really, really fun show," she admitted.
Perri noted her excitement for the upcoming tour with pop mega-star Demi Lovato entitled "The Demi World Tour," which kicks off on September 6 at Baltimore Arena in Baltimore, Maryland. "I am very excited. It begins on September 6 and I am going to be out with her for two whole months. Demi and I got just together to do some promo for the tour and we were talking about all these little fun ideas that we are going to do together. We both have a workout that we will do together every day, and I think it's going to be a lot of fun for my band and my crew and for me to hang out and do this tour. It's going to be lovely," she said.
For Perri, a massive difference exists when she records in the studio and when she performs live. "Singing live is magical. I feel like it's the reward and the thing that's worth it. The studio can be very scientific and you need to focus on making it perfect, and when it's live, it's just fun," she said.
"Burning Gold" is the sophomore single from her latest studio album Head or Heart, which was released on her record label, Atlantic Records. "I wrote 'Burning Gold' about my experience when I moved from Philadelphia to Los Angeles on my 21st birthday. I feel like I had to find some courage to do that, because I have a very loving family and I could have stayed in my hometown. I knew that my dream wasn't going to come true where I was living and what I was doing, working in the food industry. I had to really go for it and do the scary thing, and sometimes you have to do the scary thing to find your right path or to chase your dream, whatever that might be. That song is just about not stopping until all of your dreams come true," she said.
Perri listed the opening track "Trust" as her favorite song on the album, since it jump-started the entire project. "It started everything for this whole album. I had no songs for the second album, and then I wrote this song and then I immediately knew what the album was going to be called and what it was going to be sound like and what its theme was going to be. I almost owe every song to that first song. Emotionally, I am the most connected to 'Trust,'" she said.
The songstress shared that she enjoyed writing "I Don't Wanna Break" with Jack Antonoff, the lead guitarist of the band Fun. "I loved writing that with Jack and recording it with him. I love doing that one live. It's a good closer and a lot of fun," she said.
Each day, Perri is motivated by her family members. "My biggest motivation is my family. Whenever I am having a hard time, or whenever I am getting a little bit lost, I talk to them, and my heart gets all filled up again, and I go back out there and I keep going. I am going to be 28 next week, and I dream about having a family and I am thinking about travelling the world and working really hard, and how that will be fun for be later when I have little munchkins. Also, my band and crew motivate me. I travel with 11 people who I love so deeply that they inspire me constantly and I just want to be good for them. I always want to do a good job," she said.
Her singles "A Thousand Years" and "Jar of Hearts" have become smash hits in the music industry, which she acknowledged as a "crazy" yet "wonderful" feeling at the same time.
On her plans for the future, Perri remarked, "I sure would like to visit every country, and I think my schedule leaves room for me to visit Australia, Asia, the Philippines, Brazil, China and all of Europe and Canada. I want to go everywhere. My immediate plans are singing, playing, performing, meeting and hugging everybody that I could possibly meet."
While she already has been afforded the privilege to duet with acclaimed singer-songwriter Jason Mraz, Perri listed as Chris Martin (the front-man of Coldplay), Justin Timberlake and Paul McCartney as her dream male collaboration choices. "Chris Martin is definitely somebody I want to sing with or write with, and I really love Justin Timberlake," she said.
Perri defined the word success, simply as "happiness." "I just want to be really happy, and in the moment, and that's all that matters to me," she concluded.
