article imageCatching up with Matthew West: Christian music singer Special

By Markos Papadatos     Mar 25, 2014 in Music
Matthew West is one of the best-loved male singer-songwriters in the Christian genre of music. He has many things to be proud of lately.
He was the winner of the 2013 American Music Award (AMA) for "Favorite Contemporary Inspirational Artist." "That was a huge shock and surprise for me. It was such an honor," he said. "The neatest part of that was that it was a fan-voted award and that meant so much for me."
West also garnered a Gospel Music Association (GMA) Dove award nomination for "Song of the Year" for his moving song "Forgiveness." "That was so amazing. What a season this has been. I am continually encouraged that the music is resonating with people so that is awesome," he said.
His hit single "Hello, My Name Is" from his Into The Light CD was No. 1 on the Billboard Christian Songs charts for an astonishing 17 weeks, making it one of the longest chart-topping singles in the chart's history. "That was pretty ridiculous. I didn't even know what to think about that. That was unreal. It is one of the most fun songs to play at our concerts. What a run that song had. It is a lot of fun to play and the fact that it has helped a lot of people has become really special," he said.
He was on a 3-week tour with Christian superstar TobyMac, which he recalled as a "fun" experience. "That was a quick tour and after that was over, we began preparations for this 'Acoustic' tour that I am currently on, which will be in 16 cities. I am having an absolute blast and this is really special to me. It is an intimate evening where I get to share people's stories in a unique way."
West added, "The fact that my career is still going, and the fact that it is stronger than ever, it makes me even that more excited to keep doing this."
The "Acoustic" tour is one of the most unique productions that he has put together. "It is an acoustic show but it has a bigger production with multimedia to tell these stories in a different way that I think people are going to like. You get to put a face and a name with each person's actual song and it is really cool that way," he said. "It is fun to see the crowd relating to people finding hope in the middle of difficult times. It is exciting to see them relate to the songs and watch them react to those stories."
He shared that he is motivated each day thanks to his loving wife and his two daughters. "We are having a good time with the family. I am also motivated in telling people's stories through my music I hope to keep on writing songs that touch people's hearts and make their day a little bit better," he said.
West praised fellow Christian songstress Dara MacLean for her talent, who ironically enough listed him as one of the male artists that she would love to someday collaborate with. "Dara is awesome and she has got one heck of a voice," he said. "These days its fun to get to partner with different artists. That is a continuing part of my story and my creative process. I am really grateful when artists reach out to me and they give me a chance to be a part of what they are doing."
