Brad Arnold from 3 Doors Down talks new album ‘Us and the Night’ (Includes interview)

The album was released on Republic Records, which was produced by Matt Wallace, and it features their lead single “In The Dark.” “That’s a fun song. That’s a little bit different for us, but it’s a little more playful than most of our songs. It’s a lot of fun and I really dig that song. It’s a good rocker and something that people can dance to. It’s just a feel-good song,” Arnold said.

Regarding the song selection for their new album, Arnold said, “We started out with 25 basic ideas, and the one that kept developing were the ones that we focused on. We’ve always put more effort into a few songs, rather than putting less effort into more songs and picking from them. We think it’s more efficient like that, and that’s how we’ve always done it.”

Arnold selected “Pieces of Me” as his favorite song from the new album. “That song is pretty personal to me, and it’s about the struggles that we all go through, and bettering ourselves and trying to get rid of those parts of ourselves that are less desirable than others,” he explained.

When asked if he prefers singing in the studio vs. performing live, the Mississippi native chose the latter, and rightfully so. “I like singing in the studio, but I prefer singing live. I look at the studio as doing homework, and it’s almost like building the song. Live is getting to play with your new toy that you built,” he said. “I like the energy of singing live, and singing in front of people, and looking out, and seeing the crowd singing the words back to you. There’s no feeling in the world like that. I definitely like singing live better.”

For aspiring bands and musicians, he recommended that they “stick together.” “Don’t fight and stick together. For anybody that is trying to put together a band, look for people that want to do it as bad as you, and look for people that you have something in common with, and that you can communicate with musically and personally, and just be willing to put in a lot of work,” he said.

Out of his entire catalog of songs, he listed “Away From the Sun” as his favorite. “That was one of my favorite songs that play on our acoustic tour since it was written acoustic,” he said.

When asked how he juggles a family and a music career, he said, “I have a very supportive and loving wife that puts up with me being gone all the time. Thank you baby.”

Arnold concluded our conversation by defining the word success. “Without a doubt, success means getting to do what you love to do,” he said.
