article imageBoyce Avenue talks Teen Choice Award nod, music and future plans Special

By Markos Papadatos     Aug 14, 2014 in Music
YouTube sensation Alejandro Manzano from Boyce Avenue chatted about their recent Teen Choice Award nomination and their future plans in music.
On August 10, they were nominated for the 2014 Teen Choice Award for "Choice Web Star: Music." "That was great. It felt awesome. It was the very first year that they introduced the 'web' category, so it was quite the honor to be in the first batch to be nominated," Alejandro said.
They are the most-viewed independent band on YouTube in the world, with over 1.46 billion views on YouTube, which are quite astonishing statistics. The members of Boyce Avenue were true pioneers of YouTube, and they got their start in 2007 by uploading videos of them playing their favorite songs, and the world took notice of their distinct cover versions of the songs. "We were fortunate since we got our start on YouTube in its early stages, and we treat it like a full-time job and responsibility for our fans," he said. "Once that started going well, we were working on doing better live shows. The whole thing has kept growing over the last seven years."
Boyce Avenue's most popular cover to date is their version of Justin Timberlake's "Mirrors," where they collaborate with Fifth Harmony.
Their No Limits EP was released on April 22, which marks their first original music since their 2010 breakthrough album All We Have Left. "The 'No Limits' EP was the follow-up to our label debut album that we had done, so we felt like the fans needed something in the time in between the album cycles," he said.
The band writes, records and produces all of their original music on their own indie record label, 3 Peace Records, and Alejandro shared that they are working on a new album that will be out in the future. "We are not exactly sure when it is going to come out, but it is a huge part of what we are focusing on at the moment, in addition to the YouTube content going on. We have been working with a great songwriting team and we have a lot of original material. We are not exactly sure when it will be ready, but we are really excited about it," he said.
They will be touring cities across North America, New Zealand and Australia in the fall. "Touring is just our favorite part of this whole industry. It's that one time where you get to engage with the people, and that's the hardcore fans that have been waiting for hours to share that one night. Everybody is there in the same room for the same purpose and it's a magical thing. We are excited to go back to Australia after three years, since we have had an amazing experience there the last time we were there. New Zealand is exciting for us, since we have never played a show there," he explained.
Particularly impressive about Boyce Avenue was that they have opened for One Direction in the United Kingdom and that have sold out the same venues that other established artists were unable to sell out overseas, such as Nicki Minaj and Jack White. They have played at such venues as Terminal 5 in New York City and The Wiltern in Los Angeles. "That was crazy, because we played a sold-out show in London and the next day we were in the area and Jack White played, and the day before Nicki Minaj played there, yet we were able to sell it out. It's just a testament to the power of YouTube and our fan-base," he said.
They had the pleasure of performing their original single "I'll Be The One" on Good Morning America. "It was a fun thing for us to get to do, since it was something more upbeat and more exciting, since it had more energy to it. We had a lot of fun playing that out on the road. Just seeing the fans' responses to it and seeing everybody moving in the crowd was really rewarding," he said.
Boyce Avenue's plans for the future are to continue releasing more videos on YouTube and to "try to become bigger" and get their message out to more people. "We strive to write more songs and better songs," he said.
He listed "Broken Angel" as his personal favorite songs of theirs from their original music, as well as One Direction's "Story of My Life" as his favorite cover song. "I am really proud of 'Story of My Life' because it was cool to have my brother singing on that track," he said.
His dream female collaboration choices include such pop songstresses as Katy Perry, Mariah Carey and Ariana Grande. His greatest musical influences were The Goo Goo Dolls, John Mayer, Journey, Oasis, Michael Jackson and Coldplay.
Aside from Alejandro, the trio of brothers is made up of Fabian and Daniel. They grew up in Sarasota, Florida, and they are Puerto Rican-American.
