article imageBig Shot's Tommy Byrnes discusses Billy Joel and NY Rangers game Special

By Markos Papadatos     Apr 24, 2016 in Music
Wantagh - Tommy Byrnes, the lead guitarist and musical director of Billy Joel and band member of Big Shot, sat down and chatted with Digital Journal on April 23, prior to their show at Mulcahy's.
A few days ago, Big Shot performed at the New York Rangers game during intermission. "The Rangers game was a lot of fun," Byrnes said. "We also did a Knicks game, since going to a sports event at Madison Square Garden is like going to a circus. They are always doing something. It is pretty cool, and we definitely enjoyed it."
At the New York Rangers hockey game, they performed Billy Joel's "Pressure," Paul McCartney's "Maybe I'm Amazed" and Aerosmith's "Dream On."
Byrnes has been Billy Joel's musical director for 26 years. As a guitar player, he has played over 40 times at the historic Madison Square Garden. "I was told the other day, that I have played there more than any other guitar player, and I have never thought of it that way," he said. "We just did 28 shows, and then I did 12 Gardens live, so that's at least 40 shows. I have probably done at least 15 times before that with Billy between his different tours, and all the benefits that we go there for and the Elton John shows."
