By Markos Papadatos     Apr 27, 2014 in Music
Pop superstar Austin Mahone chatted about his forthcoming EP "The Secret" and his upcoming Summer Jam show at the Nikon at Jones Beach Theater in Long Island.
Regarding the song selection process for his new EP The Secret, he remarked, "I worked with RedOne for this entire project. He was the one that did 'What About Love' so it's going to sound a lot like that. It is going to have a Backstreet Boys kind of feel and I am excited about it. I know my fans have been waiting for this for a long time and I have been waiting to put it out for them."
The EP features his single "Mmm Yeah," which is a collaboration with rapper Pitbull. "I have a lot of fun recording that and shooting the video. My managers are all from Miami and they are good friends with Pitbull, so they made that happen. Pitbull was always having a good time and making people laugh. He was really humble and very talented," he said.
Mahone listed the song "The One I've Waited For" as his personal favorite on the record, since he is a fan of ballads. "I love ballads and I think it's a song that girls are really going to connect with it," he said.
His first headlining tour, the "MTV Artist to Watch Tour" was an "amazing" experience for him, which he described as absolute blast. "I am about to go on my second headlining tour at the end of July. It's going to be a fun tour. I have so many amazing and talented artists opening for me," he revealed. "I have more dancers, a bigger stage, more music and everything will be a lot bigger and better. I am really excited for it."
For his "MTV Artist To Watch Tour," he shared the stage with openers, pop boy band Midnight Red. "It was a lot of fun. They are super-talented guys and they are always making people laugh. They are cool and awesome guys," he said.
Mahone was the winner of the 2013 MTV Video Music Award (VMA) for "Artist to Watch." "That was amazing and probably the coolest thing that has happened to me so far," he said. "I have my award and I have it sitting on my speaker so I can see it every day when I am making music so it can give me a little motivation."
He went on to win two MTV Europe Music Awards (EMA) for "Best Push Artist" and "Best Artist on the Rise." "That was a real blessing and my fans helped me get that, so a special thanks to them," he said.
Over the past year, he admitted that he has seen a lot of accomplishment and support from his dedicated fans, his "Mahomies." "I am still trying to get better every day to become a better performer and dancer," he said.
Most recently, he was nominated for four Radio Disney Music Awards, which included a nod for "Best Male Artist," that he described as yet another "incredible" feeling.
On his future plans, the teen pop star shared, "I am focusing on having platinum records and I would like to win a couple of Grammys and I hope to go on my own worldwide arena tour. Those are my biggest goals."
On June 1, Mahone will be a part of the 106.1 WBLI Summer Jam at the Nikon at Jones Beach Theater in New York, where he will be joined by such artists as Emblem3, Cody Simpson, R5, Fifth Harmony, Karmin, Midnight Red, among others. "I am excited about the Summer Jam to go there and perform for people that may have not heard of me, or are fans of mine, and I hope to make them a believer. I am excited to see my other friends that are singers as well," he said.
Mahone is motivated each day by his "love for music," as well as his fans who inspire him to make better music. "It's definitely about the music and the fans," he said.
He would like to someday collaborate with Rihanna and Katy Perry as his two dream female duet choices. "
For hopefuls who wish to go into music professionally, Mahone underscored the importance to keep an open mind on things, as well as to stay patient and to keep working hard towards that dream. "Keep pushing and always keep your family and friends real close no matter what," he said.
In his spare time, Mahone enjoys swimming, playing basketball, hanging out with his friends and watching movies.
If he were not a musician, he listed a "basketball player" as his alternate career choice.
