Actress Amy Jo Johnson may be best-known for portraying Kimberly, the Pink Power Ranger in the original "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" series, but what you may not know is that she is a talented singer-songwriter in her own right.
As Digital Journal previously reported, her new studio album Never Broken, was well-received, earning her comparisons of Grammy-nominated songstress Jewel.
Regarding the song selection process for her album Never Broken, she remarked, "The new album was sort of created during three different times of my life. The first five songs I wrote last year, the next three about 8 years ago in Los Angeles and the last three in Bosnia over a decade ago. All of them recorded at different stages as well, but finished last year. It was a collection of different times/events and feeling."
As an independent recording artist, Johnson has a great deal of creative and artistic freedom. "I had the most freedom I've ever felt, because I produced the album, with the help of a few friends (Ari Posner, Zuma & Matt Sergiff). I am at a time in my life where I am no longer controlled by my fears and insecurities. Freedom," she exclaimed.
When asked about her personal favorite tunes on the CD, she selected "Cracker Jacks and Bright Lights." "'Cracker Jacks' just rings so true for me and I truly enjoy singing that song, and 'Bright Lights' because letting go of the past is the hardest thing to do," she said.
She noted that "Blue Butterfly Boy" was written during a time in her life where she was going through of series of "crappy boyfriends." "As I look back, I realize you can only love someone as much as you love yourself, and I don't think I was truly loving myself at that time, and so the boys reflected," she said.
Johnson revealed that her song "Cracker Jacks" is about relationships. "I am now happily married, but still go through many struggles with ups and downs. This is life," she explained.
Regarding the key to longevity in the entertainment industry, she underscored the importance of perseverance, as well as "the ability to let go and walk away." "I've been blessed with working consistently for over the past 20 years, but I have packed up and walked away from it all more times than my manager would probably have liked. Maybe that's it! Being blessed with a manager who lets me walk away when I need to, cause we all need to sometimes," she said.
Aside from her musical endeavors, Johnson has two short films in the works, such as Lines and Bent. "Lines is my second short film, which I've just finished and will be hitting the festival scene next year. You can check this short out at its official website," she said.
She added, "Bent was my first short film that I wrote and directed. I'm very proud of this little film. You can check it out here. It's a movie about life-long friendship," she said.
"We are right now gearing up to shoot my third short film Shooting Blanks this summer. Very excited about this little project. It will be the prequel to my first feature film The Space Between which is set to shoot spring of 2015! I'm in the middle of the second draft of the script for that film. I am beyond excited," Johnson exclaimed.
On her plans for the future, she stated, "We will be holding another Indiegogo campaign this fall for The Space Between, and probably a few StageIt shows as well. I just want to say that Shooting Blanks was funded by my StageIt shows this past year. Amazing people! My Blue Butterfly Squadron," she said.
She listed Cinjun Tate from the band Remy Zero in the 90's as her most favorite male artist ever. "Cinjun is going to be scoring 'Shooting Blanks.' That's a dream come true for me," she admitted.
On balancing both the music and the acting worlds, as well as a family life, she shared, "I actually have a hard time multi-tasking. So, my priority is always first being a good mom/wife and then my films, then acting and then music. Now that may rotate around a bit depending on which project I'm working on. I spent a lot of time this past week working on Covert Affairs so I had to put the other projects on a little hold, but not a long hold."
She continued, "The only thing I want to do right now is work on The Space Between. With all my heart. Oh and be a good mom."
Johnson thanked her fans for their incredible support over the past two decades. "I've been getting to know so many of you over these past few years, and I am blown away by the awesomeness and integrity. Truly generous cool people. I am so lucky to have such a great support system," she said.
