article imageAmerican Idol winner Caleb Johnson flops with new album 'Testify'

By Markos Papadatos     Aug 27, 2014 in Music
Caleb Johnson was crowned winner of the 13th season of American Idol, yet his debut album "Testify" did not fare well on the Billboard charts.
It debuted at No. 24 on the Billboard 200 all-genre charts, which marked the lowest debut for an Idol winner's first studio album, in chart position, as well as in unit sales. According to Billboard, it sold a mere 11,000 copies, which is quite disappointing, especially since he is on a major record label such as Interscope Records.
In addition, Johnson's Idol coronation song, "As Long as You Love Me," failed to chart entirely on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, becoming the first Idol winner's single to do so.
Last year's winner, Candice Glover, has a much better chart reception than Johnson for her breakthrough album, Music Speaks, since it made the Top 15 on the Billboard 200 charts, peaking at No. 14, and it sold 19,000 units. Glover's coronation song, "I Am Beautiful," reached the Billboard Hot 100 charts, peaking at No. 93.
Most recently, as Digital Journal reported, Johnson had criticized a previous American Idol winner for not actually being rock.
Johnson's debut album did sell more copies than Jesse McCartney's newest album In Technicolor, which had sold less than 7,900 copies during its first week, but the only difference was that McCartney released that project independently.
