article imageSony's Playstation Vue makes it easier to 'cut the cord'

By Can Tran     Nov 13, 2014 in Entertainment
Playstation 3 and Playstation 4 owners, cutting the cord on subscription TV services will be "easier" in 2015, with Sony's new Playstation Vue.
Sony's rivals are no longer Microsoft and Nintendo in the world of consoles. If you are a gamer, you already know what demographics each console is appealing. Microsoft targets the hardcore gamers, Nintendo targets the non-gamers & casual gamers, and Sony targets the casual & hardcore gamers. Since the Playstation 4 hit the markets in November 2013, about the same time Microsoft released the Xbox One, Sony continued pressing on the console being more for simply gaming.
That further proved to be true when Microsoft closed its Xbox Entertainment Studios shortly after it announced it would provide original TV content for the Xbox One consoles. Sony and Microsoft's rivalry will strictly be video games. It's up for debate on how Playstation original content will fare with Powers, starring Sharlto Copley.
It's now throwing the gauntlet against TV subscription services like DirecTV, Brighthouse Networks, and Comcast. Verizon FIOS is technically a rival because it offers Internet and TV service.
Sony is offering Playstation Vue, a cloud-based TV service for the Playstation 3 and Playstation 4. If you have either or both, you can start subscribing in the first quarter of 2015. Select console owners get to participate in the beta, which is invite-only. No news has been said about the service being available for the Playstation Vita. Apple iPads will get the service later in 2015.
According to Sony, Playstation Vue will not have hidden charges and no hidden fees. If you choose to subscribe to Playstation Vue, you can cancel at any time without paying any fees. Once you subscribe, you are not bound by a contract. No equipment and installation charges will not incur, either.
That's a given though. It is a cloud-based TV service. All you need is your Playstation 3 or Playstation 4 console and an Internet connection. Later in 2015, all you need is an Apple iPad and an Internet connection. Playstation Vita and Android device owners are left behind.
The beta will have 75 channels available from CBS, Discovery Communications, Fox, NBCUniversal, Scripps Networks Interactive, and Viacom. All you news junkies can take advantage of CNBC, MSNBC, and Fox News. Examples of channels are FX, Bravo, OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network, CBS, BET, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, Food Network, USA Network, Spike, Syfy, and the Travel Channel.
You're out of luck if you want to watch CNN, Marvel's Agents of SHIELD, Castle, The Walking Dead, Hell on Wheels, Scandal, How To Get Away With Murder, Grey's Anatomy, Blackish, and Rookie Blue.
If you're a sports fan, Playstation Vue offers enough channels to keep you occupied.
Mixed martial arts fans can tune into the Ultimate Fighting Championships on Fox Sports and Bellator MMA on Spike.
Professional wrestling fans can enjoy WWE Monday Night Raw on the USA Network, WWE Smackdown on Syfy, and TNA Impact on Spike.
The beta will be implemented in the United States. It will specifically be available to users in New York City, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles.
You can watch shows up to three days after their original broadcasts without the need to record. Saved shows will go into your cloud account.
It is unknown if the CW Network will be available on Playstation Vue due to CBS owning one half and Warner Brothers owning the other half. You can always download the CW app and watch the latest episodes of The 100, Arrow, The Flash, Supernatural, Reign, Jane The Virgin, The Originals, The Vampire Diaries, and more.
Playstation Vue makes cutting the cord easier, but it most likely won't offer everything. It's unlikely you can get HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, or Starz. If you want HBO, you can wait for next year where it will have a streaming service.
Nothing was said about AMC, BBC, The Walt Disney Company, Time Warner, AMC, or A&E Networks getting on board. You probably won't be able to watch Bates Motel, Dr. Who, Bad Ink, Wahlburgers, Flipping Boston, or Duck Dynasty.
If you want to watch anime or Asian drama, most likely won't be available on Playstation Vue. You can still download the Crunchyroll, Viki, FUNimation, and DramaFever apps on your mobile devices.
Playstation 3 owners can still use Neon Alley for their anime fix.
Sometime in the future, original content could be created for Playstation Vue. Netflix (House of Cards), Amazon (Alpha House), Hulu (Little Mosque On The Prairie), Crackle (Sequestered), and DirecTV (Kingdom) have already done it.
Sony didn't just announce its Playstation Vue service, it also celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Playstation console.
The video meshes scenes and game play from games from all Sony consoles over the span of 20 years. When you think about it, the Playstation Vue announcement is a powerful way to kick off Playstation's 20th anniversary.
