Following the massive input from fans, Capcom's R&D has confirmed that it has pitched the concept of a Resident Evil 2 remake to the publisher's leadership.
It was announced by Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, the producer of Resident Evil HD, on Facebook that R&D Division 1 has pitched the concept of remaking Resident Evil 2 to Capcom's leadership. He also thanked the fans for their input and support in trying to get the project started.
No official confirmation has been made if Capcom has approved of the project, but its speculated that an announcement should be made in the coming weeks.
Despite no announcement made, several in the gaming media are speculating that Capcom will approve the project. Chris Carter of Destructoid has noted that remakes have become part of Capcom's business model. Christopher Grant of Polygon also noted that fans have been demanding a remake of Resident Evil 2 ever since the success of REmake for the GameCube.
It could also be speculated that the success of Resident Evil HD along with welcoming support for Resident Evil 0 HD could be a driving force to determine if Capcom decides to remake Resident Evil 2.
Hirabayashi announcement comes a few days after Capcom asked fans on Facebook how they feel about a Resident Evil 2 remake. The community universally stated yes along with advice on how the remake could improve on the original.
