article imageNintendo announces tiny 'NES Classic Edition' with 30 retro games

By James Walker     Jul 14, 2016 in Entertainment
Nintendo has unveiled a tiny version of its classic NES games console. NES Classic Edition will launch in the fall and comes pre-installed with 30 of the most popular retro games. It provides an authentic NES experience using modern hardware and displays.
Nintendo's announcement of the NES Classic Edition comes just days after the launch of Pokémon Go, the worldwide phenomena that has already earned Nintendo billions. The NES Classic Edition is a "nostalgia-filled" version of Nintendo's famed eighties video game console, the Nintendo Entertainment System.
Aimed primarily at collectors, NES Classic Edition comes with 30 pre-installed games selected from the most popular titles on the original NES. Hits such as Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Donkey Kong, PAC-MAN and Kirby's Adventure are included, introducing the games to an entirely new audience.
The games have been updated to include multiple suspend points, allowing you to take a break while completing a level and still be able to return to it later. You'll be able to play in a way that suits you, freed from worrying about losing your progress.
The console itself is a near-identical miniaturised version of the original NES. The graphics hardware has been upped dramatically to meet modern standards. NES Classic Edition connects to HD televisions and monitors using a supplied HDMI cable.
You have a choice of controllers when playing games. Nintendo supplies one NES Classic Controller, a version of the original NES controller that has been updated to work with the Classic Edition. Additional NES Classic Controllers will be available for purchase for $9.99 each.
Alternatively, you can connect the NES Classic Controller to a modern Wii Remote and use it to play games on the Nintendo Wii and Wii U. This allows you to play old virtual console games for the Wii using a more authentic controller, providing full nostalgic immersion.

"We wanted to give fans of all ages the opportunity to revisit Nintendo's original system and rediscover why they fell in love with Nintendo in the first place," said Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime. "The Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition is ideal for anyone who remembers playing the NES, or who wants to pass on those nostalgic memories to the next generation of gamers."
The original NES launched in 1983 in Japan. In 1985, it arrived in North America, helping to reinvigorate a stagnating video game industry. It featured 8-bit graphics and support for two controllers. The NES became the best-selling video games console of its era and over 60 million consoles have been shipped worldwide.
Nintendo will launch the NES Classic Edition in stores on November 11. Suggested retail pricing will be $59.99, an offer that enthusiasts are likely to be willing to accept. Whether playing NES titles for the first time or revisiting old favourites, the mini replica of the original console gives you a whole new way to experience some true gaming classics.
