Microsoft launches premium Xbox One Elite Bundle for enthusiasts

The bundle was unveiled on the Xbox blog and will be available worldwide from November, just in time for the crucial holiday season. U.S. pre-orders are opening from today and are currently exclusive to GameStop and the Microsoft Store.
The package is the most performance-focused Xbox One bundle yet. Microsoft describes it as the “ultimate gaming experience that comes fully loaded and jam packed with premium features to take your gaming to the next level.”
The console itself is given a matt-black finish and a 1TB solid state hybrid drive (SSHD). Following on from the recently-launched 1TB Xbox One, the introduction of an SSHD will increase performance when loading new areas of a game or turning the console on. Microsoft claims that the Xbox One Elite edition will resume 20 percent faster from its energy saving mode than the non-SSHD equipped console.
This is achieved by combining a super-fast solid state drive with a high-capacity mechanical hard drive, hence the phrase solid state hybrid drive. The drive includes a small cache area of solid state storage to keep the most frequently used files in, making access to them faster than having to spin the disks of the mechanical hard drive. Hybrid drives are ideal in systems where there isn’t enough space for an SSD and separate hard drive, just like inside the Xbox One.

Aside from the high-performance console, the bundle also includes Microsoft’s new Xbox One Elite Wireless Controller. The premium-grade accessory was designed with feedback from gamers and includes customisable controls that can be switched depending on game or preference.
The metal construction lowers wear and tear on the analogue sticks, keeping them accurate for longer. The analogue stick tips and d-pad can be replaced with magnetic concave or convex variants while a set of interchangeable paddles on the back are ideal for shifting gears in racing games like the upcoming Forza Motorsport 6.
The controller also features the ability to make profiles of sensitivity and control configurations. Each key can be rebound to a different function and two profiles can be stored on the controller at any time. They can be switched on-the-fly by sliding a switch on the back.
This level of hardware is likely to keep Xbox enthusiasts very happy over the holiday season when joined by Microsoft’s boast of the “greatest games line-up in Xbox history.” The premium package doesn’t come cheap at $499 but it isn’t too extortionate either.
The 1TB variant of the standard Xbox One console has a recommended retail price of $399 while pre-orders on the Elite Wireless Controller are currently at around $149. As the bundle gets you a higher-performance console for $50 less, it could make the perfect gift for somebody wanting a new Xbox and an Elite controller to go with it.
