article imageForza Motorsport racing onto Windows 10 for free next month

Microsoft has announced that PC gamers will be able to get their first taste of the hit Xbox racing title Forza Motorsport from early May. The company announced Forza Motorsport 6: Apex for Windows 10 earlier this year, an exclusive PC Forza experience.
Apex isn't the full version of Forza 6 and won't support all the features that the Forza franchise is known for. Publisher Microsoft Studios and developer Turn 10 Studios are pitching Apex as a way to introduce PC gamers to the traditionally console-only series, emphasising the core racing experience to gauge how it is received.
Forza Motorsport 6: Apex was announced back in March. Today, Microsoft announced that fans will be able to try the game out for the first time on May 5 with an open beta. The company has not said when it intends to launch the full game.
"A new era for the Forza Motorsport series begins on May 5 with the release of the open beta for Forza Motorsport 6: Apex," said Turn 10 Studios Community Manager Brian Ekberg. "Crafted specifically for Windows 10, Apex represents the critical first step in the future of the Forza franchise as it expands onto Windows 10 PCs. Apex combines the power and performance of DirectX 12 with Turn 10's racing expertise, our proprietary ForzaTech™ engine, and Forza's legacy of stellar content." Most importantly, Forza Motorsport 6: Apex is our way to introduce Forza's award-winning gameplay to a new audience on Windows 10 and invite a new group of gamers to develop a passion for cars and racing."
Apex will use Microsoft's DirectX 12 graphics technology to run at resolutions of up to 4K, the highest detail ever available in Forza. Players will have access to 63 cars, each featuring working headlights, doors and interiors. A full damage model, wet-weather racing and day-night cycle will also be included.

The game is set around a 12-event "Showcase Tour" which will serve as an introduction to Forza for PC gamers. There will also be a series of regular events called "Spotlight Series". Unlike the full Forza 6, there will be no online multiplayer mode. Players will be restricted to the local content with no way to compete against friends.
Forza 6: Apex is the first Forza game to make its way to PC but almost certainly won't be the last. Microsoft and Turn 10 have said that future titles are likely to be launched on Windows 10 and the Xbox One as Microsoft makes Xbox more about the gaming experience than the console brand.
Despite the healthy feature set, Forza is unlikely to become as dominant of PC racing as it is on consoles. There's no shortage of modern racing simulators on PC as Assetto Corsa, Project CARS and DiRT Rally remain firm favourites with fans of the genre.

Apex's reliance on Windows 10 and the issues it introduces could make it difficult to get established. Windows 10 games still don't run in proper fullscreen mode and cannot disable the controversial V-sync graphics option, although Microsoft has promised to fix both of these in the future.
Turn 10 Studios will keep updating Apex throughout the open beta period. It intends to optimise its performance across a "diverse selection" of different PC hardware configurations, introduce support for USB racing wheels, add a selection of customised livery designs and patch in the ability to disable V-sync when Windows 10 supports it. The game will be available for free to all Windows 10 users, potentially introducing millions of gamers to the Forza franchise.
