Electronic Arts attempted to charge gamers $4.99 to download the Xbox One demos of 'FIFA 14' and 'UFC' before before reverting back to being a free download.
Video game demos are normally offered as a free download for gamers to try before buying the actual game. They could be downloaded through a digital media delivery service like Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, or Steam.
Hence it came as a major shock when it was uncovered that EA was charging money to play their demos. Its unclear when EA started charging for the demos but by July 4, all demos are available for free download again.
A representative of EA had stated that it was an error in the system that has been resolved.
The story was first reported by Hardcore Gamer before being picked up by other game news sites.
While something like this could have easily been brushed of as a glitch but given EA reputation in the last few years, many gamers were quick to denounce it as another one of their gimmicks. Gamers were quick to criticize EA and the Chief Operating Officer, Peter Moore.
No other publisher has been charging to download demos.
