Finnish game developer Rovio has announced it will be releasing a proper sequel to its hit "Angry Birds" title later this month. Details on the new game are currently scarce but fans are told that they will be able to play from July 30.
In a company blog post, Rovio write that it "can't wait to show our fans what we've been cooking up", adding the team is "super excited."A new website has been launched for the game which lets you sign up to get notified on launch day and displays a countdown until release.
The original Angry Birds rose to fame within six months of its launch. Attracting 3 billion downloads from across the world, everybody from celebrities to politicians have admitted to becoming addicted to sling-shooting birds into a pig pen.
Prior to its release, Rovio had been a small studio developing relatively unknown titles. Angry Birds became its 52nd game and, in its own words, comprised "colorful birds, green pigs, a slingshot and a super catchy theme tune."
The company quickly capitalised on its success, releasing numerous spin-offs, including Angry Birds Star Wars, and seeding the game to new platforms, opening it up to as many players as possible. Merchandise began appearing in high-street retailers as Rovio's bright and bold game attracted millions.
Now, the company is back with "the mother of all sequels." Angry Birds 2 will launch in app stores worldwide on July 30. Although the list of supported platforms has not been revealed, iOS and Android are effectively certain to be included.
The release date a day after the launch of Windows 10 could mean that Microsoft fans may be in luck too. Rovio's previous titles have made it to nearly all platforms eventually so even if Angry Birds 2 isn't initially available on your device then you may still get it later.
Fans are encouraged to follow the company on social media to stay up to date with all of the Angry Birds 2 news. Serious gaming this may not be but it is something that 3 billion people have played.
