The former actor and socialite Zsa Zsa Gabor, now 98 and spending each day stuck in a bed, has still not been told her only child has died, her husband said last week. Francesca Hilton died just a few days into the New Year.
Von Anhalt claims questionable
It was the National Enquirer who interviewed Gabor's ninth husband, Frédéric Prinz von Anhalt — a prince in name only — and he claims she is being kept in the dark about her daughter's death.
Francesca was essentially homeless and living in her car when she died of an apparent heart attack on January 5.
“I don’t want to tell her," von Anhalt said. "If they had talked over the last year or so, then maybe I would have told her – but because they didn’t talk for so long, there is no reason to tell my wife."
Von Anhalt, 67, was born Robert Lichtenberg and at about 35 years of age managed to become the adopted son of Princess Marie-Auguste of Anhalt, though he had been her masseur. Even if he was her naturally born son, the way German royalty works he would still not have been a prince.
His assertion that mother and daughter did not see one another for one year prior to Francesca's death goes against reports that she had weekly visitation rights of one hour given her by a court.
Last year she spoke to media about her visits, even saying her mother was often unresponsive and wondering why she continued to live. Von Anhalt, however, told the National Enquirer that Gabor was doing well and he expected her to keep living for a while yet.
Francesca Hilton: Alone at death
Francesca Hilton had a tragic life. In her 1991 autobiography One Lifetime is Not Enough, Zsa Zsa Gabor claimed her husband, Conrad Hilton, raped her and that is how she became pregnant with Francesca. Gabor and Hilton were divorced before their daughter was born.
Growing up in lavish surroundings with frequent trips, she nonetheless lacked regular contact with her father and to her death was shunned by his other children. When he died in 1979, she was left but $100,000 of his fortune, said to be worth $200 million. She sued but lost.
She never married and had no children.
Gabor turned 98 on February 6; she and her husband live in a Bel-Air mansion they once owned; due to financial difficulties they sold it two years ago but a part of the deal stipulates that they can remain until her death.
