Details have started to emerge concerning the characters to appear in AMC’s previously announced “The Walking Dead” spin-off.
According to TVLine, six principal characters — Sean Cabrera, his son, Cody, Nancy Tompkins and her two teenage kids Nick and Ashley, and Andrea Chapman — have been sketched out for the new drama series.
Since announcing its plans in September 2013 to develop a “companion series” to The Walking Dead, further news from AMC has been thin on the ground; and, despite these details, AMC have refused to comment, TVLine reports.
Sean Cabrera is described as a Latino male in his early 40s, a good man trying to do right by everyone in his life.
His son, Cody Cabrera, is whip-smart and rebellious, known in town as the angriest kid around.
Nancy Tompkins, a thirty-something single mother with two children, looks like the girl next door, but with an edge.
Nick Tompkins is Nancy’s screwed-up teenage son — “too old to stay home, too scared to flee.”
By contrast, her teenage daughter, Ashley, is “mostly level-headed,” her ambition in direct proportion to her brother’s failures. She said to love her mom but feels it’s time to get out of Dodge.
Finally, Andrea Chapman, who’s described as a somewhat wilted “flower child”. In her forties, Andrea has retreated to the outskirts of the city, to recover after a horrible marriage.
AMC President Charlie Collier has been talking about the new series. “Almost from the beginning of The Walking Dead on AMC, fans have been curious about what is going on in the zombie apocalypse in other parts of the world,” We Got This Covered reports him as saying. “Obviously, we all take our stewardship of the original franchise incredibly seriously and we [...] are all proceeding with extreme care in order to ensure that we are offering fans something truly compelling, engaging and distinct. We’re thrilled to be taking this next step with these remarkable partners.”
According to Coming Soon, the pilot episode of the as-yet-untitled spin-off is scheduled to enter production in late 2014.
Zompocalypse
Meanwhile, the latest Season 5 trailer made its debut last week. Somewhat short on dialogue, the clip is long on action, featuring gunfights, bus crashes and a mega-explosion.
Season Four ended with Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and his group “outgunned, outnumbered, and trapped in a train car awaiting a grim fate.” Season 5, the Independent reports, picks up shortly thereafter, with the official AMC synopsis reading:
What follows is a story that weaves the true motives of the people of Terminus with the hopeful prospect of a cure in Washington, D.C., the fate of the group’s lost comrades, as well as new locales, new conflicts, and new obstacles in keeping the group together and staying alive.
Stories will break apart and intersect. The characters will find love and hate. Peace and conflict. Contentment and terror. And, in the quest to find a permanent, safe place to call home, one question will haunt them ...
After all they’ve seen, all they’ve done, all they’ve sacrificed, lost, and held on to no matter what the cost ...
Who do they become?
Season 5 of The Walking Dead will premiere in the US on Sunday, October 12, and around the world just 24 hours later.
