An official rehearsal video was streamed for "Death Note The Musical," a stage adaptation of the original manga, set to open April 2015.
The Death Note manga, written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata, is getting adapted into a musical, which will open in Tokyo in 2015 from April 6th to April 29th. A rehearsal video streamed online by the talent agency HoriPro. The video has a musical number performed by Kenji Urai and Hayato Kakizawa, both being cast as the story's antihero Light Yagami.
A press conference video was also streamed with Urai, Kakizawa, and Teppei Koike, who is playing Light's arch-nemesis and secondary protagonist “L.” The press conference video also contains a brief musical number performed by Koike and Fuka Yuzuki, who play Misa Amane (Light Yagami's love interest).
Other cast members include Ami Maeshima (playing Light's sister Sayu), Megumi Hamada (playing Rem), Kotaro Yoshida (playing Ryuk), and Takeshi Kaga (playing Light's police officer father Soichiro).
While Death Note The Musical is purely a Japanese production, there is some American collaboration.
The musical score is being created by Frank Wildhorn and Natalie Cole.
Wildhorn's credits include Bonnie & Clyde, Camille Claudel, Carmen, The Civil War, The Count Of Monte Cristo, Cyrano de Bergerac, Mitsuko, Mary Shelly's Frankenstein, Svengali, The Scarlet Pimpernel, Tears from Heaven, and more.
Ivan Menchell is writing the script for the musical. His writing credits include Jonas, Phil of the Future, The Nanny, and The Cemetery Club.
Death Note The Musical's first stop is in Tokyo at the Nissay Theatre. In May, the show will open in Osaka and Nagoya.
South Korea will also receive the show, but with a new cast.
Death Note The Musical will not likely play outside Asia, unless there is a huge enough demand to see the show. It is not uncommon for video games, manga, and anime, to eventually get adapted into a stage play or musical.
The stage play adaptation of Persona 4: Arena will open at the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre on December 19th and run until December 23rd.
Next year, Masashi Kishimoto's Naruto will be adapted into a stage play, where it opens in March at the AiiA Theater in Tokyo. The play is part of “Naruto's New Era Opening” project.
Death Note is a supernatural detective story, where 24 meets Bleach. Light, a genius law student, has a black and white view of what's “good” and what's “evil.” Life is boring for Light. Boring is no longer the case when Light comes across the titular “Death Note.” When he writes down a name, the person will drop dead of a heart attack.
Light teams up with a shinigami named Ryuk, the previous owner of the Death Note, in killing all the world's criminals. The mysterious mass heart attack deaths get the attention of Interpol, who enlists the help of genius-detective L.
It becomes a supernatural cat-and-mouse game between Light and L.
The original manga ran from December 2003 until May 2006 for 12 volumes.
It was adapted into an anime series that ran from 2006 until 2007 for 37 episodes, which deviates from the manga's story.
Three live films were also adapted. Kaga also played Light's father in the movies.
