If you are a lover of the zombie sub-genre of horror, then the first quarter of 2015 caters to you. Tough luck peeps if you care little for zombies.
Last year there were talks of a possible live-action adaptation of Capcom’s zombie game series other than Resident Evil, known as Dead Rising.
There were was no further news since then, but the movie is a reality and the first trailer has been streamed for the upcoming Dead Rising: Watchtower.
It is unknown if Dead Rising: Watchtower will be canonical with the main game universe, but the movie contains nods to Dead Rising 2. If you have played Dead Rising 2, you will see the obvious nods to the game in the trailer.
But if you do not, Dead Rising 2 introduced combo weapons, which you can see will be present in Dead Rising: Watchtower.
Frank West, the main protagonist of Capcom’s Dead Rising series, will be in the movie and played by actor Rob Riggle (21 Jump Street, 22 Jump Street, Hotel Transylvania, The Other Guys, and Larry Crowne).
The movie will stream on March 27th through Sony’s streaming service Crackle.
That means Dead Rising fans can watch Dead Rising: Watchtower for free.
The movie centers on an original cast of characters caught in one of the many zombie outbreaks as they must escape. Frank West appears in the movie as a special guest on the in-movie news special on the new outbreak.
These unlikely heroes must escape the outbreak before the government takes action and destroys the city.
Dead Rising: Watchtower stars Jesse Metcalfe (Chase, Dallas, and 2 Broke Girls), Dennis Haysbert (Mr. Baseball, Major League, What’s Cooking?, 24, The Unit, and The Boondocks), Virginia Madsen (Highlander II: The Quickening, Ironclads, Candyman, The Rainmaker, Crossfire Trail, Sideways, and Hell on Wheels), Meghan Ory (John Tucker Must Die, Vampire High, and Once Upon A Time), and Keegan Connor Tracy (40 Days and 40 Nights, White Noise, Jake 2.0, Once Upon A Time, and Bates Motel).
Ory and Tracy, respectively, play Red Riding Hook and the Blue Fairy in Once Upon A Time. Imagine known fairytale characters trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic zombie outbreak.
There are plans for this movie to be available on other video streaming services and DVD.
Keep in mind that there are other upcoming zombie games and TV shows for all you zombie horror lovers.
Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead will receive a limited theatrical screening in Australia and North America in February.
Season five of AMC’s The Walking Dead continues on February 8th.
Xbox 360 and Xbox One owners will receive the Havoc DLC for Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, which contains the co-op multiplayer “Exo Zombies” mode, on January 27th. PC, Playstation 3, and Playstation 4 owners will receive Havoc shortly after.
Dying Light also comes out on January 27th, which puts players on the role of a black ops agent sent to a fictional Middle Eastern town to investigate the source of a zombie outbreak.
Dead Rising fans can look forward to the movie this March.
The franchise is Capcom’s second popular zombie series. It is similar to, but plays differently than Resident Evil. The first game puts players in the role of photojournalist Frank West, who infiltrates a shopping mall in Colorado to document a zombie outbreak.
Dead Rising 2 put players in the role of Chuck Greene and Dead Rising 3 put players in the role of Nick Ramos, who holds the cure for the zombie virus.
