Although known for her tennis prowess, the Olympic gold medal winner Venus Williams is making a splash in the interior design field, as well.
The winner of an Olympic gold medal and seven Grand Slam titles just unveiled her latest work. The Southeast Tennis and Learning Center in Washington, D.C. is an after-school tennis, arts and academic program.
“As a designer, you design and it’s beautiful and people feel great when they walk in — but how have you changed the world?” Williams asked in the Washington Post. “For us, this sort of project means so much to us because it’s going to impact so many lives.”
Additionally, William’s designing company V*Starr Interiors has also been designing the window drapes, lobbies, models and some of the finishes of a new apartment complex in Delray Beach, Fla. She told the Sun-Sentinel that her aim is to appeal to “artists, hipsters and other creative minds.”
“I think that people will be surprised that this is something different,” Williams told the paper at the groundbreaking. “This will be a place that when you bring people home, you're excited to show it off."
Williams earned a degree in fashion design in 2007 from the Fort Lauderdale arts school, but her first love was interior design. It’s no surprise considering how interior design drives modern tastes. We see constant innovation with new designs in furniture, wallpaper and even window drapes.
She founded V*Starr Interiors in Jupiter, Fla. with the goal of working in the field. However, starting up the business was a trial in itself. Many people assumed she was just a figurehead or celebrity owner and others were happy to hire the company because Williams was part of it.
“No matter who you are or what you do, you have to be good at it,” Williams said. “You have to have the right team. You have to start at the bottom. The advantage that I had was to be able to open doors.”
Currently, V*Starr has a team of four professional designers. Although Williams began studying for interior design, she switched to getting a business degree to manage her sizeable and growing empire. The 34-year old tennis star, fashion designer and interior designer is worth an estimated $60 million.
