The BBC is reporting that Kris Leonard, River Reeves, Tomas Lowe and Jack Dakin and manager Craig Tarry were killed when their car plunged 82 feet (25 meters) from a highway bridge into a canal below.
The band, from the northern English town of Warrington, had played at Sweden’s Where’s the Music? festival in Norrkoping on Friday.
“The family are devastated by these events and are grieving the loss of their son and also for the other families involved in this tragic accident,” read the Tarry family statement, according to CNN.
According to Newser, the Associated Press is reporting the roads were slippery on Saturday night, and the vehicle carrying the band members slipped through an open section of the bridge that had opened to let a boat pass through. The bodies were recovered by divers.
Swedish police received notification of the accident about 2:30 a.m. local time and arrived on the scene in about five minutes. The officer in charge said there was a barrier before the opening with flashing lights and warning signs. Additionally, there were other cars lined up, waiting behind the barrier.
“For some reason, the car drove through the barriers and crashed down into the canal,” the police officer said. “The witnesses just saw a car beside them and kind of disappear.”
The BBC is saying that tributes for the band have been pouring in from around the world. The band released their debut single Swings & Waterslides last year and has been featured on BBC Introducing, a program that showcases up and coming new talent.
