‘Tomorrowland’ pulls past ‘Pitch Perfect 2’

“Poltergeist” nabbed $26.5 million on a slow holiday at the box office.

EARLIER: When all is said and done when the Memorial Day weekend is over, it was a battle between “Tomorrowland” and “Pitch Perfect 2” at the box office. The other newcomer, “Poltergeist,” was not part of the winning plans.

four-day total (includes Monday), is looking like a “Tommowland” will take in $40.7 million. “Pitch Perfect 2” will bring in about $39 million. Now, all these numbers will be need to be analyzed again later, due to the holiday and the nature of them on box office figures.

But, for now, “Tomorrowland” wins it. But, wait, that is only for the four-day total. There was battle for the three-day and that may take some time to settle. So, for now, stick with the overall, four-day total, and “Tomorrowland” has it.

Weekend
1. “Tomorrowland” – three-day, $32.16 million; four-day, $40.7 million
2. “Pitch Perfect” – three-day, $32.8 million; $39 million
3. “Mad Max: Fury Road” – three-day, $23.89 million; four-day, $30 million
4. “Poltergeist” – three-day, $23 million; four-day, $27 million

With “Pitch Perfect 2” holding and even battling it out says a lot about that core audience. They went, or they went again and gave “Tomorrowland” a run for the title. In the preview story, it was noted that it could go either way. If they did not show up, the usual drop would be huge, but that did not happen. It was a good second weekend for “Pitch Perfect 2.”

Overall, it is a slow weekend for what used to be the kickoff to the Hollywood summer season. That has been pushed back to the first weekend in May, but having a huge Memorial weekend is often still in the cards. Last year, the winner went over $100 million for four days. “X-Men: Days of Future Past” was that film.

This time around, a winner in the $40-43 million range for its four-day total, is nothing to cheer. But a win is a win. Take away Monday and an even lower take for the winner. So, it was not a huge Memorial weekend at the box office. One thing, the movies out did get some business as many were bunched up.

Although, “Poltergeist” did not compete for the top spot, that did not matter. It was not going to and its finish may be the silver lining as it was not that bad.
