Harry Potter fans everywhere will rejoice at Warner Bros’ latest announcement that they plan to release three new spin-off films in the next few years.
The Harry Potter movie franchise concluded back in 2011 with Deathly Hallows Part 2, but the franchise lived on through Pottermore, an online extension of Rowling’s best-selling book series, packed with extras and snippets building on the original story.
J.K. Rowling is currently working on the screenplay with Warner Bros based on her original spin-off book, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them in her screenwriting debut. The films will focus on fictitious wizarding author Newt Scamander and his adventures searching for magical creatures in an extension of Rowling’s magical world.
According to Rowling, after being approached by Warner Bros, she was quite insistent on writing the screenplay herself.
“It all started when Warner Bros came to me with the suggestion of turning ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ into a film.” reported JK Rowling, “I thought it was a fun idea, but the idea of seeing Newt Scamander, the supposed author of ‘Fantastic Beasts,’ realized by another writer was difficult. Having lived for so long in my fictional universe, I feel very protective of it and I already knew a lot about Newt. As hard-core Harry Potter fans will know, I liked him so much that I even married his grandson, Rolf, to one of my favourite characters from the Harry Potter series, Luna Lovegood.”
Rowling is also keen to state that the trilogy will not be a sequel or prequel to the Harry Potter story:
“Although it will be set in the worldwide community of witches and wizards where I was so happy for seventeen years, ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world,” stated Rowling. “The laws and customs of the hidden magical society will be familiar to anyone who has read the Harry Potter books or seen the films, but Newt’s story will start in New York, seventy years before Harry’s gets underway.”
In addition to the film series, Warner plan to develop Fantastic Beasts across its video game, digital and merchandising initiatives, as well as an expansion of and its Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme parks and studio tours.
Warner Bros stated that: “We are excited to work with Jo [Rowling] again and expand the Harry Potter magical world with her. We’re sure fans will love the next trilogy as much as the Harry Potter movies”
Fantastic Beasts is set to be directed by David Yates, director of the last four Harry Potter movies, reuniting production team including Rowling as well as Steve Kloves, Lionel Wigram and David Heyman. The films are due to be released in 2016, 2018 and 2020.
