Santiago - Three people died and twelve were severely injured on Thursday night when a building collapsed during a concert of the long-running anarcho-crust-punk British band DOOM at a nightclub in Santiago de Chile.
According to information provided by police to local media, at about 11:30 p.m. a containment fence at the entrance of the nightclub where DOOM, the British crust punk band from Birmingham was performing, collapsed over a large number of people attending the concert.
The administrator of the Events Center known as “Santa Filomena” said that at least 50 people who could not access the premises for lack of space entered by force, causing the collapse of a structure that crushed several people, leaving two dead and 12 injured, all aged around 20.
A third person died hours later in hospital while at least another seven people among the injured are in critical and life-threatening condition.
Police officer Hugo Insulza told the media (, in Spanish) that "According to the information given by the administrator, the concert hall and the event had all the required authorizations, but too many people pushed their way into the place. Furthermore, there were more people from the street who continued to press to enter the place which caused the collapse of a containment fence that fell on the people who were in the premises."
The victims of the accident were rescued by firefighters and taken by ambulance to emergency facilities near the concert venue.
Police said the administrator of the Santa Filomena Event Center is under arrest for the responsibility he may have in this tragedy. Police experts were assigned to investigate the cause of the incident.
UPDATE: Two days after the event that killed three people at a DOOM crust-punk concert in Santiago, a 17-year-old man died in hospital as a result of the injuries caused by the collapse of the nightclub building.
