Released on April 16, the second trailer for the much anticipated seventh (official) Star Wars movie has smashed previous records for a trailer watched online. The record has been verified by Guinness World Records and it relates to YouTube views.
The trailer, BBC News reports, collected an incredible 30.65 million views within a day after being released in April. Since then the trailer has clocked up 54 million views on the official Star Wars channel on YouTube alone. According to The Wrap, Star Wars also holds the record for the most successful merchandising of any film franchise.
The new movie hits cinemas on cinemas on December 18. In the meantime, there is probably one full trailer to come.
If you’re not one of the 54 million plus, the trailer is shown below.
The trailer contains a number of action images, without giving much away in terms of plot. There’s also a haunting voice over from Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), talking about the lineage of the Force in his family, and which might come from Return of the Jedi or it might be a new recording. Time will tell.
In related news, Star Wars fans have become excited when playing the new video game Star Wars Battlefront. The game appears to contain footage from the planet of Jakku, which is featured at the start of the new trailer where a crashed Star Destroyer can be seen partly embedded into the sand and rock of the planet’s surface. Seems as though it is some kind of Easter Egg.
