The Flash and Supergirl airing on separate networks won’t stop them from teasing a connected universe. Grant Gustin, star of The Flash, will appear on the Monday, March 28 episode of Supergirl.
“We are so incredibly excited to announce something that we have dreamed of happening since we starting making Supergirl,” said The Flash and Supergirl Executive Producers Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg. “We want to thank Grant Gustin for making the time to come visit (on top of his already immense workload) and all of the folks at CBS, The CW, Warner Bros. and DC for working this out.”
Supergirl stars Melissa Benoist as Kara Zor-El, cousin of Superman. Kara’s parents shipped her off Krypton before it exploded. She lost 12 years in the Phantom Zone before arriving on Earth. Her younger cousin is now older than her and going by the name Superman. Kara adopts the moniker Supergirl to protect National City with her adoptive sister Alex Danvers (Chyler Leigh) and the Department of Extranormal Operations (DEO).
The Flash stars Grant Gust as Barry Allen. An accident leaves Barry with super-speed. He uses these powers to fight evil metahumans in Central City. The Flash is aided by his friends at S.T.A.R. Labs and police officer Joe West (Jesse L. Martin)
The CW Network found ratings gold with DC Entertainment comic book properties. The Flash draws the highest ratings in the 18-49 demographic. The Flash spun out of Arrow, which also birthed DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. All three shows lead the CW in total viewership.
In December 2015 it looked unlikely that a crossover between The Flash and Supergirl would take place. Kreisberg told the Hollywood Reporter that legal reasons may keep the superheroes from meeting.
First of all, we don’t even know if we could, legally. And quite frankly, just making the Arrow-verse, which is what we call Legends, Flash and Arrow work and then making Supergirl work, it’s enough of a challenge without having to add a fourth player.”
Any legal concerns appear to be resolved. With Flash appearing on Supergirl, it may not be long before more crossovers between CW Network and CBS superhero shows are planned.
Supergirl airs Monday nights, 9 p.m. ET on CBS.
