article image'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' weaves a $92 million debut

By Tim O'Brien     May 4, 2014 in Entertainment
The web was going to spin in a big way for "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" at the box office, but how much was the question. The answer is to the tune of $92 million, which was not the biggest opening of the year.
That honor still goes to "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" which took in $95 million when the actuals were tallied. "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" also redefined what is April at the office.
But, having "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" fall a little short of that April opener may have some scratching their heads. After all, the beginning of May kicks off the huge summer season, not April. Wait, not anymore perhaps.
To get huge numbers like this means the fan base is not the only ones heading to see it. All demographics play a role here.
Many comparisons will be made with the current Spidey (starring Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone and Jamie Foxx) and the previous. Not here, let them stand on their own. It is better to compare it to the recent crop of superhero films being released now and later this year.
1. "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" - $92 million (actuals, $91.6 million)
2. "The Other Woman" - $14.2 million
3. "Heaven Is For Real" - $8.7 million
4. "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" - $7.7 million
5. "Rio 2" - $7.6 million
Taking a look at that top five is refreshing. Sure, there are two superhero films, but it also included a female-skewed comedy, a faith-based film plus a family flick. All in all, a mixed bag. The huge drop between one and two might be unsettling, but nevertheless, a wide selection is there.
"Belle," in just four theaters, did collect an impressive $104,493. That is a $26,125 per screen average, which is very darn good.
The second week drop for "The Other Woman" was only 42.7 percent.
Back to "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" as this report wraps. Going in, it was going to be near impossible to beat the May champ, which was "The Avengers" with a staggering $207,438,708 opening weekend. That is the all-time champ, of course. It came out in 2012.
Truth is, "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" did not do as well as expected.
