‘Jimi: All is by My Side,’ the Jimi Hendrix biopic starring OutKast’s André Benjamin, has a release date and a newly launched trailer.
Jimi Hendrix is considered one of the most influential electric guitarists of all time. But even he didn’t receive instant fame. Jimi: All is by My Side chronicles one-year of the musician’s life from 1966 to 1967 when he was just an unknown backup guitarist playing New York’s Cheetah Club and trying to make his mark in London’s music scene. The intimate portrait of a sensitive young artist on the verge of becoming a rock legend is written and directed by Academy Award winner John Ridley, who also penned 12 Years a Slave.
The film, featuring André Benjamin, Hayley Atwell, Imogen Poots, Andrew Buckley and Ruth Negga, is scheduled to hit theatres September 26 via XLrator Media. Benjamin looks at home in Hendrix’s shoes as the musician-turned-actor is finally given a role with dramatic substance. Poots is only shown briefly, but even in that short time she makes an impression.
The 99-second trailer shows an even sampling of the film, which looks to be a solid depiction of the artist before stardom brought with it all its enticements. “When the power of love takes over the love of power, that’s when things will change,” philosophizes the then 24-year-old artist.
“I want my music to go inside the soul of a person,” expresses Hendrix. “For me it’s colours. I want people to feel the music the same way I see it.” Benjamin could not look or sound more convincing articulating the guitarist’s inspiration. The other 117 minutes promise to be just as good.
