article image'San Andreas' cracks open huge win

By Tim O'Brien     May 31, 2015 in Entertainment
"San Andreas" shook up the box office and crushed the rest of the field with its win. It did what many films are doing of late - over-achieving with the win.
Going in, "San Andreas" was looking at a $40-43 million win, but now that it has won with $53 million, domestically, now may be the time to see the over-achieving trend and ask why. Not just for this film, but others. But, this report is all about "San Andreas." It went out and went over the projection by up to $13 million.
In the preview story, it noted that the film did not need to be good, or even have a solid plot. A movie like this is often pure escapism and fun to watch. Yes, destruction of major cities in which one lives, can be a winner. Like a car accident along the highway, it may be morbid, but the curiosity factor wins out.
Weekend, domestically
1. "San Andreas" - $53.2 million (update, actuals, 6.1.15: $54.5 million)
2. "Pitch Perfect 2" - $14.8 million
3. "Tomorrowland" - $13.8 million; (update, $14.3 million)
4. "Mad Max: Fury Road" - $13.4 million (update, $14.1 million)
5. "Avengers: Age of Ultron" - $10.4 million (update, $11.4 million)
6. "Aloha" - $10 million (update, $9.6 million)
There is a wide gap between the winner and the rest of the field. Plus, last weekend's weak winner, "Tomorrowland," fell hard in its second weekend. With a bank of $13.8 million over the weekend, it fell to third and may be in fourth when the actual figures come out. "Pitch Perfect 2" stayed in second and it is huge hit, especially considering its budget of around $29 million.
Sony and its release plan for "Aloha" is all about timing and it did not work. Its eight minute sample on You Tube did not really help create buzz. The buzz it had going in was bad so coming in low was expected, which is still a disappointment for sure.
Warner Brothers has a hit with "San Andreas" and brought the disaster movie back to how they are supposed to be made. Perhaps it would have been better to release this film over the Memorial holiday weekend.
