The first 10,000 spectators who get to
Comerica Park to see the Tigers take on the Toronto Blue Jays will receive a Robocop cheer card, and Robocop's motorcycle will also be on display for fans to admire.
The city of Detroit also planned a number of additional events to commemorate their favorite fictional crime fighter including unveiling a
10-foot bronze statue in front of Detroit Public Safety Headquarters where Robocop and members of the real Detroit police department would gather for a meet-and-greet during the monument's dedication followed by a photo-op.
For unknown reasons, the statue's unveiling has been cancelled, but die hard fans can follow today's events on Twitter at
#robocopday for the latest on where Robocop will be throughout the day up to his appearance at Comerica Park where he is scheduled to throw the first pitch at 7 p.m.
Reportedly, the statue was funded by a Kickstarter that began when a fan tweeted “Philadelphia has a statue of Rocky & Robocop would kick Rocky’s butt. He’s a GREAT ambassador for Detroit.”
When this tweet went viral, Detroit's mayor David Bing responded by saying “there are not any plans to erect a statue to Robocop. Thank you for the suggestion.”
With the Internet and an army of fierce Robocop fans on its side, the Kickstarter defied the city hall by managing to pool together $67,436 and an organization calling itself
Imagination Statue built the monument privately. Pictures of the project can be seen by clicking

Though the statue is finished, it is still unclear when it will be dedicated. However, once in place, perhaps the monument and Robocop Day will bring a new kind of tourism to Detroit for years to come.
