article imageRobbie Rogers-inspired ‘gay soccer’ sitcom gets green light

By Mathew Wace Peck     Oct 17, 2014 in Entertainment
ABC have confirmed they are pressing ahead with a new sitcom loosely based on the life of Robbie Rogers, the world’s only out-gay professional soccer player.
Men in Shorts is to be a single-camera comedy “inspired by the soccer player,” and is currently scheduled for broadcasting in 2015.
As reported by Gay Star News, “The show will follow a young professional soccer player who takes ‘one small step out of the closet and one giant leap into the spotlight.’”
At just 25, Rogers came out as gay in early 2013 and, although he did so at the same time as announcing his retirement from the beautiful game — “to avoid the inevitable scrutiny that would follow” — just two months later, after having spoken to a group of young gay people at a GLBT youth gathering, he changed his mind, accepting that, as an out-gay sportsman, he could be a role model to others.
In May that year, he joined LA Galaxy, thus becoming “the first openly gay man to play in a top North American sports league.”
Fiction imitating life
Details of a proposed comedy series based on Rogers’s life and career after coming out as gay were first reported by Digital Journal over the summer.
Following official confirmation of the series by ABC, Rogers tweeted: “Really excited to be part of this.”
Men in Shorts is being written by Claudia Lonow, its showrunner and the creator How to Live with Your Parents (For the Rest of Your Life), Accidentally on Purpose, Big Kids and Assisted Living.
Joining her is Jordan Nardino, who will also act as an executive producer. Craig Zadan and Neil Meron — both also openly gay — and Rogers himself are all on board, helping with the creation of the comedy.
Of Rogers, Lonow told Deadline, “I was absolutely captivated by his charm and his humor, and I just thought it could make a great show.”
