article imageReview: 'World Break' premiere is like 'Harry Potter' on crack

By Can Tran     Jan 12, 2015 in Entertainment
"World Break" blends superhuman abilities and the notion of living past lives to tell one compelling and action-filled story.
World Break: Aria of a Curse for a Holy Swordsman premiered on Crunchyroll Sunday.
Moroha, the protagonist of World Break, is seen fighting against a dragon and vowing not to forgive anybody that “takes from him.” I knew World Break was going to have lots of fighting and was happy to see the episode start off with some major battle taking place.

I thought it was cool to see a “maid” join the battle, too.

This starting fight scene made me think of A Certain Magical Index, Beyond The Boundary, Tokyo ESP, Tokyo Ravens, The Irregular At Magic High School, Sword Art Online, Log Horizon, and Chrome Shelled Regios.
The story starts off to where it begins a half-year ago, where it makes me think of the premiere episode of Absolute Duo, which I wrote a review about.
I couldn't help but think of Maria The Virgin Witch because I recently watched the premiere episode before watching the premiere episode of World Break.
Why?
The witch hats worn in World Break made me think that way.
Moroha falls asleep during his orientation and gets a vision of one of his tragic past lives, which reminds me of the relationship between Fei Fong Wong and Elly Van Houten from Xenogears.

I believe that Moroha woke up to see his literal soulmate standing in front of him, who gives an “interesting greeting.”

I laughed when Moroha recognized the girl as Sarasha and her recognizing him as Flaga, which confirms that they were together in a past life.
Sarasha made me laugh when she suggested headbutting Moroha again to help him regain his memories.

I could see World Break slowly turned into a harem story when another girl woke up and recognized Moroha as someone she knew in a past life. Things got awkward and funny when she kisses him in front of Sarasha, who reveals herself as Satsuki Ranjo in this current life.

The other is revealed to be Shizuno Urushibara, who seems to be a narcoleptic.

Satsuki's bro-con attitude was funny and creepy at the same time, but she does make a point. They were siblings in a past life and are two unrelated people in this life.

This mirrors the demotivational poster of having a sexual relation with your stepsister because you do not risk contaminating the gene pool. That technicality extends to Moroha and Satsuki because they are not siblings in this life.
World Break almost becomes like Harry Potter near the end of the first half when groups are divided into Shirogane and Dark Mages, respectively, the light and dark art users. I was under the impression that it would be prana and mana from the previous news reports on the anime, but I'm not complaining.
The episode was interesting in the beginning, but the ending was a bit average. It is to be expected though because Moroha is starting to get a grip of his previous memories and abilities. This is no different from Toru getting used to his Blaze in Absolute Duo and Sekai unleashing the Build Burning Gundam in Gundam Build Fighters Try.
I look forward to future episodes of World Break.
Watching the first episode of World Break makes me fantasize about a crossover with Absolute Duo and A Certain Magical Index.
