article imageReview: Trailer: Will Smith tackles a relevant issue in 'Concussion'

By Adam Mock     Nov 22, 2015 in Entertainment
In the latest film from Will Smith, ‘Concussion' tells the true story of Dr. Bennet Omalu and his study on head trauma in professional football.
It has been a while since Will Smith has thrown his hat back in the ring of dramatic acting, although he is no stranger to the genre. In Concussion, he definitely seems to be in good form, with a story that is both relevant, important and quiet possibly an Oscar pick; at least the trailer would lead one to believe the latter.
Concussion, directed by Peter Landesman, revolves around Dr. Bennet Omalu, a forensic pathologist and neuropathologist who discovered Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (the result of repeated head trauma) and its effect on professional football players. Facing tough adversity from the NFL to keep quiet about the problem, Dr. Omalu fought an uphill battle to shine a light on this tragic disorder.
Smith takes pride when handed meaty roles. Even when the films themselves don’t live up to critical expectations, his performances are rarely the issue. Trying on Bennet’s native Nigerian accent, Will Smith brings a subtle charm with a dose of dramatic flare, though not stretching beyond his reach. He seems to be taking the care once shown with his character of Chris Gardner in The Pursuit of Happyness. And with a film this important, let’s hope this intriguing trailer is portraying the final cut accurately.
It is always wonderful when an film can both entertain and enlighten, but trailers can be deceiving. The safe bet, Concussion will be a good movie, with strong acting. Unless there is a breakout performance or a gripping direction choice, other than the safe biopic template, it won’t be taking the world by storm, but will be a solid, well-made film. And that’s how I see it. Click the link below and watch the trailer for Concussion. Be your own critic. I’m just here to help. Enjoy.
