article imageReview: 'The Soul Man: The Complete First Season' out on DVD, July 8

Cedric the Entertainer’s Boyce “The Voice” Ballentine debuted on "Hot In Cleveland" in 2011. Soon after, Cedric co-created a spinoff featuring Ballentine, pitched it to the powers- that-be at TV Land, and "The Soul Man" series was born.
TV Land's The Soul Man has been around for three seasons now and its premise is pretty unique. Boyce "The Voice" Ballentine was a successful soul singer, a superstar, in fact, living the high life in Las Vegas, when he got “the calling”. It was then that he decided to give up the fame and relocate to his father’s church in St. Louis to become a minister. His wife, Lolli (Niecy Nash) and daughter Lyric (Jazz Raycole) were not all that pleased to leave their life of luxury. But this is a sitcom and its writers went for laughs over drama as the transition was made.
The show is entertaining. Ballentine is a charismatic protagonist. Cedric and Nash have an excellent chemistry that makes their banter sparkle. Ballentine’s daughter Lyric is a rapper, whose off-color stylings don’t sit well with her parents, but they usually manage to work out their differences. And there are smatterings of soul/gospel music throughout, which gives the show an edge.
If this all sounds like fun (it is), you can catch up with early episodes of the show with The Soul Man: The Complete First Season, available on DVD from Shout! Factory, July 8. The set contains all 12 episodes of the season plus interviews with the cast and crew, and a music video to boot.
