Review: ‘Saekano’ EP 12 wraps up the series on a beautiful & funny note

Episode 12 of Saekano: How To Raise A Boring Girlfriend, titled “The Ups And Downs At The End Of Each Day,” is currently streaming on Crunchyroll for paid subscribers. Free subscribers can watch this episode six days from now on April 2nd.

This is the final episode of Saekano: How To Raise A Boring Girlfriend, which was released simultaneously with episode 11. The episode continues from where the 11th episode left off, where Tomoya booked the first gig for Michiru and her band, Icy Tail.

He takes the managing job seriously as if he was leading Blessing Software.

Tomoya paints the reality that Icy Tail is a warm-up act because this is its first live show, where he lays the reality that the members need to build themselves up from the bottom. This isn’t different from what Tomoya is doing with Blessing Software, where he has to build his reputation from the bottom as well.

It is apparent that Utaha isn’t too happy about Tomoya making the compromise since he did it without talking to Blessing Software first.

I laughed at Eriri’s unwillingness to attend the show, which is because she is not the “oldest childhood friend” as Utaha sharply points out. You can always count on Utaha to throw jabs and barbs at Eriri whenever she is unable to defend herself.

Utaha has that cruel streak even though she comes off as proper.

The in-fighting between Eriri and Utaha, which Kato stops, doesn’t compare to the tension between Tomoya and Michiru. Eriri’s incredibly shocked look is priceless and is one of the best parts of this episode.

Watching Michiru, in maid costume and cat ears, angrily throttle Tomoya in cowgirl was also priceless.

I laughed harder when this was an opportunity for Tomoya to reveal a “harsh” truth about the rest of Icy Tail, they are all otaku like he is.

I busted out laughing when Tomoya revealed that the songs that Icy Tail played came from different anime titles. This is like a complete mindf—k for Michiru because she loathes anything to do with otaku culture, which includes anime.

Seeing Michiru in denial made the scene funnier.

Tomoya came up with the “ultimate compromise,” where everybody “wins.” I love how Tomoya caught on that Icy Tail is an anime cover band, which allowed him to set the terms for the compromise.

This reminded me of the ending of the previous episode, where there is the faint reference to Shiroe from Log Horizon. Tomoya has pulled a “Shiroe,” and became a “villain in glasses.” I loved how he worked out a deal that he can manage Icy Tail as long as Michiru helps out with Blessing Software.

In layman speak, Icy Tail pimped Michiru out to Blessing Software.

Things get resolved, but the moment is funny when Utaha makes a reference to the “position” that Tomoya and Michiru are in.

I am surprised that so much humor exuded in the first half of the episode. It becomes a touching moment when Tomoya inspires Michiru to make music for the otaku community, with Utaha has to comically “ruin” by another jab.

The revelation gives Icy Tail to play successfully.

Michiru’s “I love you line” was funny because it catches Tomoya off, but causes Utaha and Eriri to double-team him.

That’s the least of Tomoya’s pain, when a heartfelt moment between cousins led into Michiru torturing him. I was under the impression that something “sexual” would be going on, but was shown to be wrong in that department.

Tomoya manages to complete the Blessing Software doujin and now real progress can be made, which leads to the possibility of a second season. The members still have to complete the visual novel in time to present at Winter Comiket.

They have finished writing one route of the visual novel, which means they have to finish doing the other routes.

I found the episode to be interesting and I hope that a second season will be created.
