Maria The Virgin Witch premiered on FUNimation with its first episode titled “Perfect Virgin.”
The previews for the anime explain that the titular Maria is trying to prevent the historical One-Hundred Years War between France and England from happening, while this scene reveals Maria’s actions in using magic in public.
It shows that Maria is kindhearted and is willing to make a girl happy by preventing the war from happening so that her father does not have to fight and get killed.
The moment is ruined when Maria is interrupted by one of her servants, Artemis, who arrived and had to ruin the “magic.” Maria was trying to keep her cover, but was foiled by Artemis.
I can only shake my head when Artemis said she was hungry. If I was in Maria’s position, I would not make Artemis any food. Rhetorically asking, why would you make food for the person who blew your cover and not apologize for it?
Artemis redeemed herself by implying that she got the soldiers to masturbate whenever they think about her. Maria’s naivety about “rubbing” made me snicker. It is fun to have your mind in the gutter and everybody else being clueless on what you mean in the first place.
The next line from Artemis, who is revealed as a succubus, was pretty amusing. If your mind is not in the gutter, there is the implication she performed fellatio on the commanding officers.
Maria’s ignorance on what Artemis meant is cute and amusing.
There are sad scenes when the men of the land are conscripted into war like the girl’s father, which reminds me of the story behind Mulan.
The rest of the episode becomes intellectually stimulating by showing the newly conscripted soldiers, like the girl’s father, showing fear and praying to God. It is ironic as the Hundred Years War is a battle between Protestantism and Catholicism, which shows in this episode of Maria The Virgin Witch.
I found the hypocrisy entertaining and not surprising when both sides are secretly using witches, who the Christian churches brand as heretics.
It was awesome to see Maria swoop in like a member of Celestial Being from Gundam 00 and stop the battle from happening. I loved that Maria went “overkill” and summoned a dragon right off the bat, which scared the s—t out of all the soldiers.
There is the sheer sense of irony, which provides a valuable learning lesson, of Maria with the potential of being the “ideal Christian girl,” pure and a virgin. I love her response on the Roman Catholic Church, which reminds me of A Certain Magical Index.
If you haven’t watched A Certain Magical Index, the Roman Catholic Church is not above using magic and declares all the Espers of Academy City as heretics. The Catholic Church believes Academy City is the ultimate form of heresy as it focuses on science, which the Church deems is turning ones back on God.
I am liking Maria as the titular heroine because she has a brain and a strong set of political views.
If you lean towards the left on the political spectrum, you’ll enjoy watching Maria The Virgin Witch, but the socially and religiously conservative may condemn the series as talking negatively about Christianity.
The first episode of Maria The Virgin Witch was enjoyable to watch. It is an anime series I would recommend to anybody interested in political science, military science, theology, sociology, and/or anthropology.
I was surprised by this episode because I didn’t expect it to be that intellectual.
